Tommy Thickstun, the father of the first high rise manifold tooled up for the famous Ford flathead, was killed at Elsinore in the 1940s while on vacation.
Interestingly Vic Edelbrock had tried to get Tommy to change the runners in the manifold for better flow. These guys and more legends were all dry lakes racers together. Thickstun's refusal to the change led Vic to design his first manifold and the rest is history. Before then Edelbrock had a repair garage and gas station in L.A. in the 1930s.
I use to have one of these manifolds back in the day when I was into flatheads.
