Well figured it was finally time to post up this boat since I’ve been working on it for a year now. I bought this boat last September in lake Isabella. It was a somewhat clean 350 OMC all original clean boat that was turn key. However wasn’t to thrilled with the OMC setup. After coming out one day to the smell of gas I found that the original belly tanks had started leaking and thus my build into a v drive came about after some other issues being found As well. Special thanks to Cliff and Dennis Rankin for all the help!

Filled strikes inside and also got some imco tanks for cheap that I have to have modified but will be cheaper than over a grand new.

Found a bunch of delamination in the stringers but with the help of my good friend Dennis we repaired them and were able to salvage them. Also preparing the floors for balsa.

Plans are a gen4 502,yes actual 502! with a powerglide and casale gear box. Also will be running a Calgo double sheathed steering setup. Managed to also get some plates with turn buckles and pillow blocks that just need some cleaning. Threw in some random pics as well.

So the bad news is the wood grain and gel was in pretty good shape when I picked up the boat however that’s declined as times gone on so after seeing excessive checking on the main deck and the wood grain port side I decided to regel the whole boat. Plan is to lay up a couple of layers on the deck after grinding all the cracks out then primer. I’ve been sanding like a mad man and I’m determined to get this done in the next month god and beer willing.

Nice job man. I have a 83 Howard and I have a question about the glass tanks, did they have a bottom in them or was the bottom of the boat the bottom of the tank? Also what strut angle and location are you going with. I'm sure you know that will have a big affect on the overall performance.

the tanks were made in their own mold then installed in the hull.

Looks like you filled the transom hole but did not replace the transom wood?

The tanks did have have a bottom and they did appear to be coated inside somehow but it didn’t last. Transom was not replaced just a plug, there wasn’t any rot.

Strut I have is I want to say 9 degree and I have a few different setups from different people and not sure which one I will go for but definitely not a stock location. Hope to go fast or faster someday for now it will be mild and for pulling my 6yr old daughter waterskiing.

curious how much of the original boat will be used once fully complete? People always rag on me for buying crap to start with but if I am replacing 90% of it anyways. I have also bought stuff that was turn key but it seems as soon as you replace/fix one item you find 10 others that you would have done differently and it snow balls from their.

Looks like you have been making good progress, can't wait to see the final product.

Appreciate all the kind words and I thought I was buying something turn key but nope lol. I agree 90% of everything will be replaced literally. It will be worth it though as I have an emotional attachment to this boat and have wanted one since 10. I grew up on Lake Arrowhead and hope to be moving back in the next year or so.

Strut location , angle, barrel height. Will play a major factor of how the boat will perform at high speed!!!!!!

If not correct the boat will hit a speed wall and not push any faster!!

U need to figure out how fast is fast enough for U?????

Ur talking about going fast and faster!!
U need to set it up now because I’m sure U don’t want to be redoing the strut and v-drive placement and re drilling the hole later on down the road???

My old set up was 10* ,barrel was 21” from transom and was pretty deep in the water with blown 540@850hp I would only see 85mph!!!!

Which I know the Hull could handle triple digit mph. But was really set up as jus a cruiser???

So thousands of more dollars later. Modified strut new v-drive new rudder glass work redrill hole and v-drive placement. We will see if she breaks into the triple digits???

Deff do ur home work and talk to other guys with fast Howard’s and see what there set ups are????

Right on Blownbillybob, now is the time to address that strut angle, location etc. I won't cost any more or be anymore work to do it right.

A friend of mine built what to my knowledge is probably the quickest 21-foot Howard. Ran in the nines I think at 109 miles an hour.
The guy that owns it now is a friend of BBC 500.
The boat was built for huge power from the get-go. I don't know if Brad's able to contact the guy to find out where the strut and v-drive are. Might be worth a shot.

I couldn’t agree more with strut placement and setup/rigging are everything in this. I hopefully only plan on doing this once. I have several different go fast measurements but haven’t pulled the trigger on anything just yet. I have measurements that racey posted from the Herbst spectra, another from a howard Phil Bergeron (r.i.p.) set up as well. Also cliff 74-spectra has some as well. Any and more feedback on placement would be great! I don’t plan on winging this by any means.

I had a fiberglass repair person tell me if ya get the glass dust on your skin to rub with the direction of your hair with a Woman's
nylon stockings, and it will pull out the glass.
Paint suits work good taped around your boots and gloves, along with a face mask with the correct respirator.

Or, you could just grind more fiberglass and eventually you'll just "Get used to it." Kindof like mosquitoes in the Everglades. :D

For what its worth Phil Bergeron built me a 7.5 degree strut and had me mount it with the barrel 24" from the transom. It works great and we have seen the boat go 110 mph.

Well finally got her off the trailer and onto a dolly so I can continue sanding away. Now I’m able to get to the sides. Hope to lay some glass down and get some primer on soon. Work continues this week.

It was actually pretty easy. Had my neighbor pull his super duty behind it and hooked a car rachet strap to his hitch. Then thanks to my 5.9 cummins just inched it off enough to get a jack under the back and basically pulled it straight off and put the dolly under it. Was super easy took 20mins.

It helps to have a flat driveway, There would be no safe way in my sloped driveway.

Finally got the deck down to bare glass and chased some areas that look like trouble. Also chased some checking on the cap and also where the windshield use to be. Learning more and more as I go but feel like I’m getting a system down now and fiberglass is fun either that or beers good but either way it’s winning!
