I gained 100 rpm so at 5600 now would like to be around 6800

I think I was have carb problems running fat gonna go threw carbs this winter or some new 1s

I did notice that I did not have to trim down to keep from porpoising like before until I got in the 5K rpm range

Cav plates were all the way up at 4K and the boat was set nice

Starting where I left off at the beginning of summer as I was running out of time putting everything together I wanted to do some custom stuff to the c-500

It’s going to be going to menkins (Tom) for a rebuild and gear change someone was allready in it and changed the gears from when it came from casale. 1.25. I believe it has 1.29 or 1.33 in it
The lower shaft was shimmed wrong and they could not get a full thread contact on the nut and when I first got the boat it actually popped the whole lower flange completely off. Good thing for the safety collar
So I had to machine the flange so it would sit deeper on the shaft

Planning on making up some adjustable radius rods and mounting brackets?????

So new HD pinch clamps are done they have 1/2x13 threaded top and bottom holes for heim joints and radius rods
Rebuilt complete box all new bearings ,seals, gaskets and new nuts!!!
Ready to GO!!!!

But looks like I’m going a different direction. Probably gonna go with a split case 12* box with some HD Menkins parts so this 1 will be for sale shortly!!!!

Just scanned this thread from beginning to end. It's an awesome build! I wish I had some of the tools you do for all that engine work. maybe some day.... but for now all I can do is spec what I want in a short/long block to my engine builders and do the rest. I have to imagine playing with all them machines can be pretty fun :)

Did we ever discuss the location and angle of the strut? Now would be a good time to make some changes if needed.

No we didn’t???? What do ##s we lookin for??????
Well on my Howard the original strut was 10 deg and the back of the barrel was 17" from the transom. This worked fine until I put the blown 548 in and got the speed into the 90's. At that point the boat got squirrely and begin to bow steer and was a handful. After throwing a prop blade and nearly jerking the strut off the bottom, I consulted with Phil Bergeron and he advised me to go to a 7.5 deg strut and move if forward so the rear of the barrel was 24" from the transom. I had him make the strut and I mounted it and remounted the V drive and the boat handled so much better it was incredible. It stopped chine walking, carried the bow and I was able to get it to 109 mph with the same engine. I'm not sure the same dimensions would work on your Hallet, but it would be worth the effort to talk to Phil.

It will, with some adjustments of engine height and trimming of your v-drive plate.

Cool, that looks very much like my strut. What degree is it now ? This is a bit of work but was well worth it on my boat. How far forward are you going to move it ?

Looks good, was the shaft log not centered over the original shaft hole ?

New strut angle new strut location
Moved forward 2 3/4 so prop shaft lands forward of old hole

So, if the old hole was based on the alignment or mis-alignment of the strut to the keel, because the strut is used to guide the hole saw, what did you do to assure the new strut is more closely centered on the keel?

Not trying to be a smart ass btw, it's something I am trying to figure out too.

Construction laser, digital level/angle finder. Plumb bobs

So I’m gonna level the boat side/side
Shoot the laser across the bottom of the V which also lands on the floor and mark the floor with a pencil cause I might smudge a snap line
Install strut and shaft as far in as possible then drop plumb bobs down to the floor off the prop shaft and adjust strut as needed

Can you move the strut around some to get it aligned with the bottom of the V and line on the floor? I had assumed you were using the existing holes and location for the strut.

Regardless, take lots of pictures when you do it.

The OG 8 holes are a little bigger then the 3/8 bolts so I have room to wiggle
Plus it got moved forward 1 hole set and I have to drill 2 new forward holes and those will be to size so it will line back up pretty close on final assembly
