I heard about the repaving this morning and economists say this will do nothing for the economy,
They are encouraging building new roads and infrastructure not paving over shit that has discolored.

I think the best thing that could be done for the American economy is to step up noise enforcement on US waterways.

Ford announced it was building a new Car Factory in India and would employ about 5,000 people. I think we should figure out a way to build the cars here and ship them overseas. This is where our government could help dealing with other countries on trade agreements. I know we can build the cars here with our labor and engineering.

Well if they want to build that same plant in South Carolina, they'll be sued by the government as that is a non-union state. :skull

If I was Obama I wouldn't give a rats ass what happened from here out. Why bust your ass for 4 more years?? Once you are the POTUS and your term is over you are set for life. Secret Service follows you everywhere. You are basically retired. He will live out a life of luxury from here on out.

So do you really think he cares about what happens to us? He's a celebrity now.

I think the union thread explains why theyre moving overseas. This is like the last big turd going down the toilet bowl. Say adios to manufacturing here and if you want to make a profit.

The idiot promised to pave more roads when he was running the first time.....lot of damn good that would do.

Isn't it interesting that obama is going to give us more of the same? Another 300-400 $Billion printed up to do what, fix roads? Check out your gasoline prices and see how much of the price is taxes designated for maintenance of the highways and bridges. What happens to that money? I think most of us know!
What the country needs now is PRESERVATION of existing jobs so they are not shipped overseas as so many jobs have been already. Many countries (China is a good example) have such a huge difference in currency valuations that many of the products imported to the USA are vastly undervalued and therefore, have and will kill the U.S. companies that normally would compete with them.
My suggestion would be to impose a 2-5% tariff on all products coming from the countries that have vastly undervalued currencies. Yeah, I know, what about free trade. Well, what about it? Which country is suffering here? Might create a trade war? OK, which countries would withhold their products from coming here if they had to pay a tariff? Including those Fords coming from India. Not many I would guess, including China who damn near own us now anyway with their U.S. treasury note holdings that they would want to collect on.
The tariffs collected MUST be used to subsidize any and all U.S. companies that manufacture here and exports their products outside of the USA. That would create jobs based on free enterprise profits and not the U.S. Treasury. Not a whole lot different from what Japanese govenment did in the 60's and 70's when their electronics companies sold products in the USA at prices far below their home markets. However, the 2-5% tariffs would not be a huge advantage to say the least.
Of course the huge National Debt has to be dealt with a plan that would cover a decade or more of reduction payback.

They need to pave more road to accommodate the growth from the "cash for cars" program which was really the tipping point of putting the economy back on track.

I didn't really get that from that thread.

I also think blaming the unions is way off.

Too much government is the problem.

We used to be a thriving industrial country.

It is fixable. Just need someone to do it.

He's going to give the country more stimulus spending but being the ultra-politician he is, he's going to call it something else.

Hey Barry, you have no plan, you have no idea what you're doing except spending this country to ruin in the name of your socialistic ideals.

You can call it something else but it's still pathetic, useless and a waste of everyone's time.

The fact that he's giving a speech to a joint session of Congress for his effed up POS "plan" shows how clueless this guy is. Speeches to joint sessions of Congress are given by Presidents with incredibly important information to share with Congress and the country.

Political speeches are NOT appropriate for a joint session of Congress.

I look at it like this.

If I was going to allow a 50% partner into my business what kind of person would I look for and what would he need to bring to the table.

Make it harder and more complicated to run my business?
Steal from me if I get too successful?
Publically bash me for making too much money?
Add costs that competitors don't have to pay?

Our Budget Problems go waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy further than paying for illegals. They are bread crumbs in the big picture, although i don't agree with giving anyone free money, it creates a moral hazard, and is not a good policy in any way shape or form. As the Libertarian mantra goes "I oppose the initiation of force to achieve political or social goals". By telling one person they deserve to get money for nothing due to hardships, you are at the same time telling another that they do not deserve all of their money due to their success.

Here's my take on the speech, it's political posturing, President Obama is gonna talk up a big old storm about this plan his administration has to 'turn the economy around' and 'get america back on track', the republican congress is not going to back any plan he has (whether it's just because of pure partisanship, or because the plan sucks doesn't matter on the campaign trail, they can present it how they want to the public).

He will then use this as a campaign talking point about how he tried so hard to get the country right but was blocked by the evil tea partiers and now they are to blame for our continued economic woes. And he did his best to work with them but they are just too stubborn to come to an agreement.

Politics is a dirty dirty game and has very little to do with the truth.

He will use this all year to campaign on and promise it will be fixed if you reelect him and gets a better congress to work with next term

All his plans boil down to these two simple things:
Borrowing and Spending
His speech will take a long time to explain in his "special" way but borrowing and spending is all he will propose. Government reduction and spending cuts will not be in the plan despite having over a thousand agencies - most of which will never serve the average taxpaying citizen.

Only a fool would try to spend his way to prosperity.

This Kenyan is indeed, a fool.

Obama could turn the economy around and put the country back on track with 2 words:

That's as likely as U-26 admitting he was wrong to vote for the Kenyan!:D

This lottery winning he and all his Chicago friends are enjoying is simply too good to let go of. Why else did he start campaigning the day he took office?

Welcome back, by the way.:D

Look, if we just keep it up, we win.

Say no to everything, allow nothing to happen - like the past two years.

Not just no - HELL, NO!

If we can continue 'starving the beast' then we can kill it.

Remember, the worse the economy gets, the better for us!

Then, in 2012, we can kick out the 'Kenyan', repeal Obamacare, eliminate Medi-Care, Medi-Cade and Social Security. We can close the EPA and the FDA. We can end Wall St. regulation, start drug testing for welfare and arrest all illegals, just for starters.

Oh, happy days!

Well, we now spend $10.3 Trillion over the next ten years on the welfare crowd - 97% of whom are fully capable of working for a wage.
Obama to Spend $10.3 Trillion on Welfare: Uncovering the Full Cost of Means-Tested Welfare or Aid to the Poor

Here's my solution - you tell me the flaws in this proposal.
Make the announcement that 100% of welfare recipients that are not physically or mentally handicapped will receive their last payments on 12/31/2011.
Take the Trillion$ being saved and give them to any and all American business employers who apply for the opportunity to train and employ these same folks with the money they would have otherwise received. A bunch of things will happen here:
* First and foremost, self respect is restored
* American businesses, large and small receive a monster shot in the arm
* America's GDP skyrockets
* Job opportunities will open up all over America in all fields
* Struggling employers get free employees for a couple years to rebuild their business base
* Income taxes are collected on the funds that otherwise were lost boosting America's income
* Welfare recipients are now trained and employable
* There is a visible end in sight for America's biggest lost expenditure which will shrink exponentially by the end of 2013.
* Everyone learns that they must work in order to survive
* Many will desire more from life where they will go to school, better themselves and improve their position in life.
(this list could go on for quite a while)

Now, the naysayers (liberals) will say this program might be taken advantage of. Hello! You say that as if welfare isn't the worst investment being scammed from our nation today. Administration of this program would easily be funded from money saved and welfare program workers on their way out. Not a dime would be paid to an employer or an employee, in turn if they aren't performing daily their required task. How is this not an excellent way to end one of the worst tax dollar abuses in history?

We do not spend 10.3 trillion annually on welfare, that is a projection of what will be spent over the next 10 years.

"According to President Obama's budget projections, federal and state welfare spending will total $10.3 trillion over the next 10 years (FY 2009 to FY 2018)."

If you stopped welfare tomorrow it would be incredibly irresponsible to give that money to someone else (business owners) it would just be welfare for businesses, WE DON'T HAVE THE MONEY IN THE FIRST PLACE. You use the savings to go towards the deficit and debt. Giving a bunch of free money to any sector of the market will result in a massive bubble and subsequent crash, you can't stimulate any sector of the economy by infusing it with cash, it has to grow from the bottom up to be truly healthy and sustainable.

Our debt will be our downfall, wherever it comes from, be it Multiple Wars and Policing the world (Several times the cost of welfare each year), or welfare, or any other wasteful thing we are doing. Our Debt is debasing our currency, that is what is draining this country of it's economy.

I stand corrected but I'll disagree that it's better to just give these funds to lazy folks rather than instill a sense of self respect in every employable citizen by putting him/her to work.

The actual annual welfare expenditure is a mere $700 Billion Annually these days.

It sure is obvious when the increased welfare spending also hit the hardest! It's all that "Obama money."

Want to see a real fix to the unemployment problem? Remove the payroll tax, workman's comp, fica/ss/medi, basically allow businesses to employ workers without having to do any of the bullshit paperwork. Remove the restrictions on firing workers, allowing employers to not have to worry about hiring someone, them not working out, and then being legally liable if they decide to fire the person. And remove the minimum wage while their at it, let the market and negotiations dictate what job is worth what pay, not arbitrary government policy

If they still want to fund all these programs FICA/SS/Medicare then implement it as part of the 1040 form, taking the burden off the employers, also see how long they last when the workers actually figure out how much they are paying in taxes.

Then take the 700 billion and put it back towards the deficit.
