I have a buddy looking at a boat. Trying to help him out with any kind of info.

1981 v drive...supposedly built by Ron Baker.

461 Ford/c6 trans

Anybody have any kind of info or history on this model or hull?

Looks like some decent rigging for back in the day. IMG_0675.jpg IMG_0677.jpg IMG_0678.jpg IMG_0682.jpg IMG_0676.jpg IMG_0684.jpg IMG_0679.jpg IMG_0680.jpg IMG_0681.jpg IMG_0683.jpg

Don't know anything about that hull other than it has a C500 vdrive in it. If he buys it he'll want to brace it up. Other than that, dude has some fancy foot tattoos.

Just out of curiosity since it seems to be a real mild setup.. Why do you think it needs additional support?

Because they aren't solid mounted they tend to "walk" or wobble at idle. This will wear the output flange and prop shaft. The prop shaft is held in the flange by a couple set screws only. If it gets sloppy in there the prop shaft can come out under hard deceleration. Which tends to create an "OH FUCK" situation.

do they make a kit for attaching to the case or are they custom one off stuff?

Custom, but not difficult. With that said, plenty of them running around without bracing as well. I wouldn't make a decision on the boat based on that. But it would be something to check out, prop shafts and flanges aren't cheap. rigging 2.jpg

I sense some attitude there CT. :)

Nothing suspicious in the pictures, other than the warnings from OldSchool.

UCH isn't braced up either and I was told to do the same.

Basically the C500 uses the propshaft to maintain alignment. :yikes

I cant tell from the angle of the picture, but I would be adding some safety collars to the propshaft if it doesn't have them. What size propshaft is in it? 1" or 1-1/8" no pictures of prop or other underwater gear. Two blade, three blade? Stainless prop, bronze?

Not much to make a determination on sir.

I'm not familiar with Baker boats, I think they were mostly OB's?. But, I would just check for all the usual used boat stuff, rot, solid floors, is it beat. Definitely water test it to make sure it runs, shifts, floats. But, if this is a one off deal there is usually a reason they only made one. Someone like AzGeo would likely have some kind of knowledge about it, it being the manufacturer.

I do dig the driveshaft hoop. Uch has a much longer shaft and no hoop. :yikes

I'm not gonna lie, it has always been a concern of mine.

I know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, thinking a blind guy would fall in love with the ole spectra.

I think with a little clean up here and there and some scrub a dub dub and she will be good. Pretty bullet proof with the Alpha and 260

Baker boats worked with and laid up I believe stoker boats before they went to eliminator. They made some nice boats. This is the first v-drive I have seen though.

Just an older cruiser that happens to be a v drive. Bakers were good hulls. As said standard caveats apply. The only thing I question is thr stock tailshaft. Dont know how that works on c6s. Does it have an oil line to the bushing?

Baker use go under the name Kona Boats. First Vdrive Baker I have ever seen probably built for him personally. I would not be afraid to buy this boat it's got a good vdrive and a lot of deadrise should run nice

I like that it's a v-drive, I like the Ford power and Baker's are generally known as good boats. If anyone has any knowledge on these it will be AzGeo or maybe Twocents. For a family truckster, I'd bet it works very well if it's mechanically and structurally sound. Go for it.

Hard to tell from the pics, but is this a v-bottom with a pad, or more like a mod-vp with tunnel chines ?

Looks like they bought it last night...

Like mentioned it was built for/by the owner. The same family has owned it since then.

Lots of receipts and pictures...kind of cool just needs some clean up and love.

Here are some pictures coming out of he mold...I don't think it has tunnels can't tell about the pad. IMG_0688.jpg IMG_0689.jpg IMG_0690.jpg IMG_0691.jpg IMG_0692.jpg IMG_0693.jpg

Pad appears to be roughly 6" and no tunnels but a reverse chine. So long as it's sound, should be a nice river / ski boat :thumbsup

Prolly want to check the gas tanks to see if they are fiberglass.

Brian

aluminum:)

He has a pretty good feel for what to watch out for. He does cnc programming for a company that I think does some work for marine industries west. I think he knows bob personally and is going to take the boat there for a once over.

That's cool. That's the kind of history you want when buying something used. It's good to know it wasn't passed around like a stripper at a Duke Lacrosse party. Hope they enjoy the boat, old v drives have soul.

looks like a nice hull for the era, I like it.
maybe old rigger here on the boards would have some knowledge of this boat?
Hopefully there will be some follow up posts as to how this venture plays out when the boat hits the water and the new owner learns how it performs. Would be cool to see it turn out to the proverbial " diamond in the rough" so to speak.

Cool seeing these post! I bought the boat about a year ago, ran it with the 460 but wanted to go faster so my dad and I built a 580ci bbc and th400, changed out the c-500 for a split case. I rewired the entire boat new gauges and fuel system also. The boat runs a solid 75mph now and is one of the best ridding boat I have ever been in. It’s a heavy boat they went crazy on the layup.
