The 2018 ARP Long Beach Sprint Nationals
Presented by
Nick Rose Insurance

August 4 & 5 Long Beach Marine Stadium
5255 E. Paoli Way, Long Beach 90803

Starting in 1946, the Southern California Speedboat Club (SCSC) has been conducting races at the “birthplace” of powerboat racing on the West Coast, Long Beach Marine Stadium. Once a year, in August, the Southern California Speedboat Club stages the annual ARP Long Beach Sprint National Championships Presented by Nick Rose Insurance for Sprint Boat racing featuring 10 classes of the fastest Flatbottom, V-Bottom & Jet Boats from around the nation competing for bragging rights, titles and their share of prize money.

The ARP Long Beach Sprint Nationals is presented by Nick Rose Insurance & Ecology Auto Parts, Ahern Rentals, Jet Re-Nu, Sea-Tow, Amsoil, Hotboat.com, Hot Rods & Hobbies. The real beneficiaries however, are the thousands of spectators who turn out to experience the best high powered boat racing in the world.

There will be ten separate classes of boats competing, including the 140+ mph water pounding K Racing Runabouts (K Boats). These 2,500+ horsepower blown alcohol flatbottoms are guaranteed to have the entire crowd at the waters edge to marvel at their awesome power and speed .
Just as old as the Southern California Speedboat Club, the Crackerbox class with their unique configuration of flatbottom boat with a driver and rider sitting behind the 314 cubic inch V8’s makes this class the perennial crowd favorite as they thrash their 15.5 foot length hulls around the course racing rail to rail. Look for the P55 “California Cracker” of Mark Conavay to defend their 2017 National Championship. The Unblown Flat class aka a combined Super Stock & Pro Stock Flatbottom class, capable of reaching speeds over 120 mph down the straights will see some tremendous competition with a group of seasoned veterans take on some great up and comers like the defending 2016 & 2017 Long Beach Sprint Nationals Champion, Greg Duff, #640 “Boot Barn”, driving for John Grijalva, San Clemente, CA will rematch with Ty Newton driving the "Wild Child" #80 for David Rankin, Hacienda Heights.

Once again, National Championships titles will be up for grabs in all classes. The always favorite Grand Nationals will see the 2017 defending National Champion Andrew Barker, #227 driving "Shakedown" from Long Beach, CA against a great field of drivers including Chuck Sousamian #22 “Ecology Auto” Whittier, CA who's been pushing his Rayson Craft to the front of the pack all season. From the first drop of the green flag to the checkered the GN’s are sure to keep the crowd on their feet. Charlie “Guzzie” Hamill #81, Holladay, UT driving “Peep’s Pride” will be on hand to defend his 2017 GPS 100 title. Comp Jets will be scheduled to race for their National Championships led by the 2017 National Champion, Billy Mason, CJ 702 “Imcor, Phoenix, AZ as well as the the Sportsman Extreme (SE) Runabouts which showcases limited Cubic Inch (350) spec flatbottoms. 2017 Sportsman Extreme Long Beach Sprint Nationals and National Champion Tony Applegate, #40 Boise, ID driving "Slo Poke" will defend against a very large field of able challengers. The Classic Endurance, Classic Outboard Runabouts and limited stock hydroplanes will also be on hand to showcase their classes and race for a national championship.

The 2018 ARP Long Beach Sprint Nationals will feature race teams from all over the country descending on Marine Stadium. The 100 plus boat team armada is set to wow the Long Beach crowds.

There will also be a vendor midway that will feature everything from souvenirs to food and beverage booths as well as a beer garden and don’t miss the classic V-drive display where meticulously restored V-drives from the yesteryear of racing will be parked for all to enjoy. Bring your family and friends and share the legacy that is Southern California Speedboat Club Sprint Boat racing at Marine Stadium.

Gates open at 8:00 a.m. racing starts at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $20.00 per adult, $10/child (under 5 are free). Military with active I.D. are also free! Motorhome spots are going to be a public draw in mid June. There are only 32 motorhome spots available. SCSC will be holding it's annual public lottery draw after making the formal announcement on www.scscracing.com and the SCSC facebook page only. The date, time and sign up info will be posted. Race teams are welcome to sign up for the draw as well. Travel to the Motorhome (non pit side) of the stadium is done either on foot or bike during the race weekend.

Where is the public lottery draw held? How exactly does it work?

When SCSC opens the sign up period, interested parties will fill out the form and send it in to the designated person. Since there are only 32 spots up for grabs it's basically 1st come, 1st served. If the form is not filled out correctly it can be disqualified. Best of luck.

Never been. Would it be wise to bring chairs? Where does everyone park? Behind the stadium near the park?

Chairs are useful if you want to plant yourself for the day, or you could bring an easy up to put on the sand. I used to arrive early and park on the street, many times with a bicycle to be able to visit friends on the other side if I was not helping crew on a boat.

Hi,

Thank you for the reply. Our group has not decided if we are watching from land or water.

We are looking forward to the event. Years ago, Campbell Carl offered to take a cooler in for me and introduce me to the program. I regret not hanging out as it was his last year.

Around what time does the event end?

It ends between 3 and 5pm. Many people park in the parking lot, and set up their chairs on the sidewalk right there. Watching from the water is tough, because they keep the spectataor boats back pretty far, for safety reasons.

Can spectators be in the water and watch the race or do you have to stay up on the beach?

I have heard this race from my house for years and have never been able to make it. Finally, we are going. How is the crowd? Is it packed? We are planning to bring a 2 year old for a few hours (hearing protection of course) and was wondering if there is a relatively relaxed area we can view from. Any suggestions? Do the boats run as far as mothers beach (before the bridge)? Thanks for any information.

Yes it is usually packed and I would recommend getting there early (gates open at 8:00 am both days) and bring beach chairs/blanket. There is NO bad viewing area at the Stadium. You can watch from either the beach side which has the pits and vendor alley and the Classic V-Drive display or the North Side of the stadium where the motorhomes are parked. There are two grass areas over there to view the event from. Enjoy the show!
