I have a 2006 Duramax - is there anything I should know before buying a new 2018
2018 2500HD LTZ with the Duramax.
The good the bad and the ugly???

Lol many complain about DEF. it’s really not that big of a deal. The benefits of the new trucks far outweigh the negatives of DEF.

It's great, other than it deteriorates at temps above 86* and causes sensor problems. Too many issues on all types of trucks for me. I will drive my pre DEF 2009 Duramax until the wheels fall off.

Maybe daily driving mine helps. Put 35-40k a year on the truck and I probably go through a def tank every 5k. However I’m pulling dump trailers and picking up equipment with it as well

Besides the whole system needing to be replaced around a 100k and it isn't cheap.

Well that sucks. This is my first diesel and adding DEF hasn’t been a big deal. Just so happens that it’s at the dealer getting the super reductor, flux capacitor replaced. It’s under warranty so it’s more of a nuisance than anything. If it takes a shit in another 60k i’ll be pissed.

46k on a 16 Denali. Hasn't seen the dealer since it left. Zero problems, the truck is down right amazing. Its well worth the purchase.

It’s been my experience that the people who have issues with diesels (mostly not saying there are not exceptions) don’t drive them enough. Once a month to the river is not what diesels were designed to do.

If you’re going to put 10k miles a year on the truck just buy the gasser. You’ll never recoup the additional cost of the diesel.

Yea my 13’ just turned 30,000 miles it’s only been to the dealer for oil changes. I will be deleting mine one day sooner than later I’m sure but the def is not a big deal i just fill it up at the big rig stations it’s cheap and easy that way.

It will not be a daily driver. I drove the gasser and was NOT impressed.
If I bought a gasser I would have to TINKER with it as soon as the warranty was up.
I use the truck to haul stuff for work, home and the boat to the river.
If I stretch the Daytona to a 30 or 33 I will need the diesel.
My 2006 is stock and still blows away my buddies 2005 that is chipped.

I have not driven the newer diesel yet. The salesman told me the gasser was just a truck but the diesel is a monster.

I am waiting for the 20’s. No rear AC vents in a crew cab is insane IMO in this day and age. The new 2019 1500’s have rear AC vents and heard the 2500/3500 in 2020 get them.
Love my 2006 LBZ CC too much to let it go. Plus I just upgraded a few things when the rear axle seal blew.

Once you encounter a problem where the word def appears on the repair ticket when
it is out of warranty you are into thousands to repair it.

That's when it makes sense to spend thousands to make it a "ranch" truck (not applicable in California)

08 ---> 15 ---> 17 Dmax. It's gotten better every time, and it's still hard to believe these stock motors are putting out such amazing horsepower and torque numbers. There is almost zero turbo lag when you hit the pedal, and the exhaust and grade braking does an amazing job at holding whatever speed you want going downhill.

Rams have rear AC currently. Do Fords? Agree that’s crazy that Chevy doesn’t have rear air

Candidly so does my 07 Sierra Classic 3500(LBZ) with the EFILive tune and 4" exhaust........the engine braking and Allison transmission are simply awesome......but then again I'm one of those 10K a year guys who only uses this to pull my 14K lb 5th wheel.......up pretty much any hill at 60 MPH all day long!!......but I certainly do like my buddies 17 Denali HD on the inside!!!

My 15’ F350 has rear A/C. Doesn’t sound right that the Chevy doesn’t have rear air in a crew cab.

My 03 HD crew cab did, but the current 17 Denali does not. I haven't had anybody in the back complain yet, it seems to cool down pretty quick back there. I think there are heat vents in the back under the seats though...

It wouldn’t concern me either but does seem weird they don’t have them in 2018. Thought rear air is pretty standard for a $60k vehicle, truck or car.

Nope they dont.
My '15.5 Denali HD 3500 didnt have vents to the rear, unless they were on the floor under the seats. My kids complained about it for a while. It is crazy, cause my '05 chevy LT duramax had rear air vents in the console.

It’s not a product line issue? Like LT doesn’t but LTZ does?

No, they haven't had them for a while. I believe they're bringing the back for the 20 models

Yep they didn't do it this body style. I just got rid of my 3500 denali, and if it didn't have it, none of trim levels would have had it either

That’s bizarre but as long as it all works and cools down it wouldn’t bother me. Just weird that they eliminated it to begin with. It is a perk having the option.

Regardless, they’re bad ass trucks. The big three manufacturers are hitting homeruns with their trucks. There is literally a manufacture that meets any truck buyers needs and doing it with comfort.

I drive a Chevy truck for my daily vehicle and my ford for towing. Love them both.

They do make really good power stock. But these motors are pretty bad. The Ford has a ton of studs and within a hair of being internally balanced. The Cummins can handle a ton of power with some head studs. I ran 90 PSI through a stock Cummins engine for years. That's just crazy

I agree!
Not much of a mopar guy, and im mainly a gm guy, but they are all nice!
I just stepped down to an '11 chevy 2500 LT gasser from my denali dmax 3500. Its all i "think" i need right now since i sold my big 5th wheel. But I've never towed my boat with a gasser. So i guess we'll see!

Op....to answer your question. I think they are pretty good trucks..
I just sold my 2015.5 (with wifi and the newer design mirrors) gmc denali hd 3500 and it had 24k miles. Never had any issues. Did the 4 included oil changes, changed the fuel filter a couple times and spin on tranny filter and all was good! I think its hard to beat the duramax engines, other than first gen had the injector issues.

Ram = yes
Ford = yes
GM = No. GM removed them in 2012 and they will be back in 2019 (1500’s) and 2020 (2500/3500’s)

I was sold on a Ford 350 CC DRW, but the logical side of me said to wait. That plus I know the GM at Hoehn GMC, so I will wait until I can order a 2020.

Get a dodge. O3 with just shy of 300k. No cat. No def. A mild tuner and a killer b turbo. One pulling mofo. The only time it left me stranded was when an idler pulley seized and sheered the bolt off.

You towing a new innovative dump trailer earlier on the 110 in bumper to bumper traffic? Saw a rig that looked like yours. Crew cab with a Stahl body.

I have a 17. It has 10k miles on it. So far no problems at all. It doesn’t have rear ac vents but cools down the truck just fine without them. I had a v10 f250 before and I will never buy a gas truck ever again. The only thing I dislike about the truck, is it doesn’t have a turbo gauge and doesn’t have a tranny temp gauge. Besides that I love it.

My biggest fear!

Already I have had 2 sensors go tits up... still warranty

Emissions warranty are usually 8 years but I'd like to tune way before that

I was going to hold out for the 2020 GM HD trucks, but they are hideously ugly looking. The GMC not as much, but still pretty not a pretty face. Since the tuners haven't been able to crack the latest Duramax L5P engine code I'm just going to settle for a 2016 Denali 2500.

I have a 16 ltz. One and mainly only complaint is the deff fill is under the hood and that’s super gay! Any plastic that deff gets on has a nasty white film on it. I know which truck stops have deff at the pump and fill it up there, screw messing with those plastic jugs.
