Here are some shots I took today at the Polar Bear Run. Conditions were choppy and foggy. Fog wasn’t too bad at start but quickly got thick to where skiers were difficult to see at times. Many didn’t finish. Best time that I heard was 1:05. Sorry for some of the blurry pictures I was doing the best I could while in a moving boat. I didn’t get any return shots because we came in due to the fog. If anyone wants originals I can send via email just shoot me a pm with what ones you want. Thanks.

Seeing that 'ol Rex Marine Hallett SS is cool. It always amazes me to hear about 16' flat-bottoms that once were a normal part of that round-trip to Catalina.

Great pics. Thanks.

Marty Wells early creation called a Wellscraft.

Marty was also instrumental (his design) with the white boat from nordic that had the 1350 with two drives. Similar bottom but a lot different.

I've read blurbs about the Wellscraft (Marty) but never seen the bottom design --- thanks !!

It was brutal... 13 started and we were One of three teams that went all the way there and back. Catalina was an absolute mess, super choppy and the 3-4' rollers almost on top of each other. I can normally run it in an hour ten, to an hour fifteen in average conditions... Today was an hour an thirty.
I think the winner, Todd, did it in an hour five. 😲

Is this from Long Beach to Catalina?

Or where do you guys start?

Then I assume you run to Catalina and back without stopping?

Yeah LB to Avalon and back. One lap race. Stat is between Island Grissom and Island White, turn at Avalon and finish at the stern of the Queen Mary. Usually how it goes. Today was a fun run and not a race.

Crazy!

We usually do Catalina every year(for the last 7yrs) 7-10 days for Christmas cause my wife's step mom grew up there and one of her boys and some family still live there. We take the ferry out of long beach to Avalon..

All I can say is YOU GUYS ARE OFF YOUR ROCKER!!🤣 especially this time of year🥶

Sorry to hear.... well, you guys doing that know its the luck of the draw on conditions.... today would be perfect, zero wind and glassy. As you know I'm sure, its all about early early early.

I think Avila's Frankensteinesque Warpath w/ staggered twin SBC has that Wells designed bottom or similar. @Taboma
