Looking at an older 21 Daytona with a 200 merc efi motor. Realistically how well will the boat run with that motor and what speeds can I expect to see? Also, without completely repowering, can anything be done to the motor to increase HP?

A 200hp belongs on a 19' Daytona...a 21 is a lot of boat for that motor. I'd say mid 60s if you prop it right. If the price is right...shop for another EFI 200...that boat would be kickass with twins

I had a 94, same setup 75-80. Then burned a hole in #5.

21's need a 2.5 or 3 liter motor to really come into their own. A 2.4 isn't really enough especially if it's the classic deck, those are heavier. Making an old motor faster is just wasting money and it's pretty much futile. If it's a carb motor that's another reason to upgrade, the carbs are in pain in the ass especially in Arizona summer heat.

And I think 75-80 would be generous for a 25-30 year old 200 horse motor

I'd say around 80. My uncle's Lavey Seabring runs right at 80 and it's a very heavy lay-up and is not much shorter.

To the OP, is it a 2.4 or a 2.5 motor? A 2.5 has good possibilities to bump power. A 2.4 is limited aftermarketwise.

Also depending on the year of the motor there were some done by Mercury for one year or two and then they gave up on it and went back to carbs since the efi sucked so bad. They re came out with efi the second time and had it figured out.

My 20 centurion is a little smaller than the 21 Daytona, but is pretty heavy layup and lots of seats/interior. With a 2.4 carb 200 and a fishing lower it's ran a best of 77 at 4500' altitude. I throw a 21 laser 2 on it for 90% of use and it runs right at 64 on gps, will pull Any skiier out of water, is pretty efficient at cruise, etc. The 2.4 can be built, look up "cherry 2.4" on byuboyz. I have the WH46 carbs and have had zero issues in 20+ years. I've lost one power head due to oil pump failure so it's premix now.

The 2.5 has more low end for sure and the FI is nice.

Thanks for all the input. Talked to the seller and from what he said the boat just sold. It's the second one that Fishing Fool posted

The good ones don't last a few days, the ones for sale awhile are usually pretty tired

for what its worth. I have a 1996 21 daytona. old motor was a Merc 200 carb with off shore mid. ran 73mph with a 26 3 blade. I agree with Walt, these things need bigger power and im glad i upgraded the engine.

I had a 2.5 offshore on my 95 with dyna jack plate,( my favorite boat to date) would do 96. Then, When I blew up the 200 on my 94 I had DCB rerig with a 300x fat and heavy, it would just break 90. No jack plate, DCB said I would break it, so had to find a happy medium to set height.
