My brother in law is starting his hatch build on his 21 TT race/family boat. Starting to take shape.

A. That motor doesn't look extremely cleaned and polished. (No offense OP)

B. If you're the type that cleans and polishes motors then you're the type that would do it with or without a hatch!

A. It’s being worked on, so it’s dusty.
B. He keeps his shit as immaculate as possible.
C. He’s one of the only ones on here that actually works on his own boat...

The original version of that hinge was cut out of a manilla file folder and mocked up using other cut-outs to replicate the deck area and then hand made, cut out of wood and then aluminum using a bandsaw. Funny to see where technology has taken this. That was the late 90's. Tom Hawley (from Schiada) planted the initial idea in my head and I took it from there. It has been copied over and over since then. Guess I did something right. I still haven't seen another one that attached the ram through a crossbar like I did though.

If it makes you feel any better my proof of concept started out as a cardboard cutout as well. And might I say amazing work

I like the work you're doing on yours as well. I love seeing people doing their own things. Hands on craftsmanship. I think I was tied up to your boat at the lower sandbar last summer

Your hinge system is by far my favorite and has been stuck in my head since the day we were all tied up at the sandbar. I’ll be doing something the same as you and Chris. It just looks so clean. Question for you..... how the heck did you mount them to the pivot without seeing any hardware? So clean. I want it. Haha

That's the best part. There is a piece of plywood glassed into the deck. There is a stainless steel sleeve that was pressed in before the glass work so it will stay in place and not auger out (get oblong). I do not have any pictures of it sorry. Hope that makes sense.

I think I’m picking up what you’re putting down. Vertical piece of plywood glasses up in the channel. Hole drilled with stainless rod through center that gets glassed into the vertical ply piece. Then those two brackets capture each side of the stainless rod. Something along these lines?

Pretty close except the it is a stainless sleeve 1/2" OD 3/8" ID glassed in and a 3/8" bolt goes through the hinges and sandwiches the glassed in wood. The spacers inside of the hinge pieces create the correct amount of space and allow the hatch to move up and down

Killer job. I need to do the same thing to mine. Do you have the cad file for the hinges or a print.

I suggest you double the cross rib in the center. From the looks of it you cut a bunch out of it to clear the exhaust and that coupled with the fact that there is a huge horseshoe shape in front of it will leave a danger of twist or breakage and if someone were to inadvertently lean on it certainly twist. Just a thought.

It looks great by the way. Good work
