What’s the deal with rebuilding one of these 2 strokes with higher (500ish) hours assuming it’s still running fine?

Cost? Things that can’t be rebuilt? Parts logistics?

Did some searches across the interwebz but most info was pretty dated.

Looking at some twin OB cats. Most have a decent number of hours and I’d guess a lot of people run those cats fairly hard.

Wondering if it’s worth rebuilding or trying to get newer 300R motors on there.

I think Joe over at Hot Laps is the only guy in Havasu that is still rebuilding and hopping up those old 2 strokes?

Those two strokes will run a long time! 500 hrs is nothing! My Yamaha has over 3000 hrs on it and still runs great!!!

I’ve heard pretty consistently that 500ish is the ticking time bomb mark for the 300x/xs motors, especially if they’ve been on a high performance boat.

Says permanently closed on google maps. Will have to find him some other way.

I think I might need to check with the LROB folks since they seem to be getting these things rebuilt somewhere.

I have twin 200's on my boat and Joe's the only guy that works on them.

He's there:

Ship it to Jay Smith. Hell do a good job and get it done quick.

Rebuilding them should be around 6000-9000 i believe. Thats for each.

There is also Chris Carson Marine in Florida. Just helped me with my reeds on both my 300X’s and was a wealth of knowledge.

A good site for outboards is Screamandfly.com. They are a forum like this but mainly outboard guys and another wealth of knowledge on there.

I have owned a fleet of the X and XS lines. My take

X

Make BIG power!
Get TERRIBLE fuel economy. When I say TERRIBLE, I mean worse than any BBC IO deal I've had. Sub 1mpg at all times
Finicky around dock. Think about trying to take your drag car through the drive through.
Motor itself is much more race oriented and eat more parts
Mine needed good fuel

XS

Much less power than the X. I dropped 8mph switching from X to XS
Much better (2 times, maybe 2.5 times) fuel economy over the X
Sound stupid with the air pump
Very driver friendly. Little smoke, well mannered around the dock
Safe of GOOD pump gas

In my eyes, I can get over all the pros/cons to both, BUT it is the gear cases (same on both) that are the true weak link! Regardless of what series you end up with, have the lowers gone through to make sure they are in GOOD condition, install vents from the case to cowling and drill a small hole in the vent expansion tank so that when (not if) something goes wrong you will have some warning signs (hopefully). If you are going to run twins, find a spare LH complete as they are the oddball ones (if you can score a right, buy it too, it helps with downtime).

I have two X to do over the winter, both require welding and sleeves, one might be going to a bud in Australia with a motec set up. Will be doing an xs in the next couple weeks that has a fuel issue and squeaked #2.
