So is that the real name for Bluegill? I'm no fishy guy so I really don't know.

They get that big from eating zebra mussels. They call them shell crackers

That’s awesome. Never seen one even 1/4 that size.
EDIT. Added photo.

😳 As aggressive as the little BlueGills are for your nipples and skintags, knowing that these monsterous kinship creatures are in MY lake will without a doubt make me think twice about free-willy'ing it in our secret coves.

Years ago I was in Steamboat Cove, a Bluegill bit a skin tag I have on the side of my stomach, it was pretty gnarly, lol. Quite a bit of blood. It also happened in Copper Canyon. So now I have to tape it up. But I should really get that thing removed.

Bluegills and small bass bite the shit out of this, I have to bury my foot in the sand so they can't see it.

I got bit by a turtle at Mohave while sitting in a chair in the water up to my sholders, hurt like a motherfuker and it bled real bad but I didn't spill my beer.

These red ear do feast on the quagga mussels. Prior to quaggas entering Havasu a 2# red ear was considered large. Yes, they are known as shell crackers in some areas of the US. Their throats have the ability to crush the shells of mussels.

So...... it it the quagga that has allowed these fish to get bigger? If so, they should be stocking the lakes with theses guys. Keep the quagga in check, and make some good dinner for fishermen.
