Looks like somebody photochopped an M8 drive onto a 400 upper and changed the numbers.

I believe that is photoshopped.

The one thing I can tell you for certain though is they are in fact coming out with a larger HP outboard at some point in the near future. I have talked to the guys at Merc Racing, and what I was told (verbatim) was "With the exception of the 350 / 400 platform we are retooling our entire line up both ABOVE and below that platform." When I asked "Above?" the response was "I'll stand by that statement."

Merc can't let Volvo owned 7 Marine have all the fun. I am really surprised that Merc didn't strike a deal with GM on the Supercharged CTS V engine in the first place. They dropped the ball there with so many of the roll bar boats adopting that powertrain. Volvo's acquisition of 7 Marine makes them a true competitor not just a plucky startup. Things could get interesting and those who can stroke the check today and those of us who can buy it from them in 5 years will be the benefactors.

IMO merc needs two things

A 500-700 hp outboard
And a bravo style (or non surfacing drive) that will handle 600-800hp

They make these. Then they control the market

I don't think you'll see anything from Merc on the outboard till next year. They have released new gear options for the 400 gear case. They have the technology and the economy is really good so I am sure they have plenty of money for R&D of all markets. I'd bet they are focused on the top and bottom markets, not the middle of the road 565-600's with Bravo style drives. I think that is a very small part of their business. I think it's either 496 or 860, 250 or 400. Just my thought on what I see being built. I think a nice non-blown 685 with a bravo would be the hot set up for some of the smaller 27-28 cats.

Don't they already control the US market, and not by a little?
