It's time to give the old race boat some love. This boat has been so good to us. My dad drove the shit out of it in multiple ski races and its been to Catalina twice! Plans include exterior/interior gel work, new power plant and rigging. We have a ton of ideas running around but we want to keep it clean, pretty and period correct. My dad and I will be doing most of the work ourselves. We recently refreshed my 97 Howard 220 which I documented here so I thought we should do the same for this one. Not to mention there's nothing like a good father son project. Engine was dropped off yesterday and we will be tearing a part the rest of it for gel work in the next few weeks.

Going to keep it naturally aspirated and punch it out a little bit more. The old motor was a 468 with brodix heads making 650hp and torque. The new set will use the same heads but will get punched out to a 497. Callies crank, comp cam, JE pistons, Isky lifters and so on. We want a clean long term engine going back in. The last engine went well over 15 years!

A little more progress this weekend. Should be off to gel in the next week or two.

More prep and decided to cap it. Lots of little repair work, racing sure does take a toll on these boats, especially Catalina.

I remember your dad, I raced against him in stock daycruiser class back in the day...The name Cornelius comes to mind?

Looking really good.

What are the plans for the non-skid?

We only have one section in the rear that needs repair. Just like your repair actually. I sent your link/build over to Steve to see if his guy can do something similar like what you did.

Prepping the inside for gel. Going to keep the balsa exposed and run some colors throughout the inside.

Just some touching up and we can get her home and start rigging. Engine is almost ready. We received the lifters yesterday and can now start final assembly.

Sure did. I'm surprised how well she's held up. Everything looked real good minus the typical areas on most raced Schiadas. I'm stoked to see your 20 build. I need to get out and get some measurements on your mini!

Second tank in, we just need to secure both sides to the floor. Cav plates and hardware almost done. New seat bases and Dominator 3rd gen carb!

Gauges in, just need to tie the old wire into the new gauge harness. Strut and prop shaft aligned. Hopefully dropping the engine in this week pending weather.

Header mock up, when they were built originally they were too long and the wrong angle! But my dad made it work. We are going to machine the flange so that we can correct the angle and get the header centered in the hole.

Rob Ettinger texted us some old race pics from back in the day. Him and my dad had similar gel schemed Schiada's. Some classic ski racing in Parker.

We are waiting on final for the gatorstep. Trans and all lines are completed. Seat bases mounted. Just some wiring and we are ready for break in.

Waiting on revision from Gatorstep. New steering wheel should ship any day now. Wire up gauges and run shift/throttle cables. Test fire and check for leaks.

Kinda looks like one of these from Vibrant. I've been looking for one and this might just fit the bill. Summit sells them so returns are easy if I don't like it.

Lenman is correct. I ordered it on Amazon for my Howard and never used it, so we installed it on this project. I used a Joes Racing 4" bottle clamp along with a Jegs cylinder head coil mount bracket. I had to drill and tap the bracket to fit the clamp. There was def some tweaking involved. Once fitted I had the whole cylinder and clamp powdered as one piece. Then I re-installed the top vent. I get you some close ups when the weather permits.

nice! looks good, who made that?
His name is Jeff out of Orange. He built our first cover over 30 yrs ago! My dad just happened to swing by his shop as he was closing up to retire. Now he only does covers on the side out of his garage. Its where I'll take my Howard to have a new cover built.

With the new bases in places we had to come up with a different way of running the shift cable. I had my buddy machine a groove into the mounting plate Matt made for us.

All of the wiring is complete and we are ready to test fire.
