99 Cougar 21’ MTR Opportunity/Advise

I posted this in RD’s Lounge, but it was recommended I post in here as well…

I have an opportunity to get my hands on a 99 Cougar MTR. It’s set up for an outboard, but needs a motor (which I also have access to) and some serious gel TLC. It’s been verified as Canadian built.

I’m new to the high performance word. My hang up is I’ve never been in one and have no first hand experience how they handle. How do they stack up against other 21’ boats? How are their manners? Any handling insight I can would be much appreciated.

It was also said @War Canoe is the guru. So I’m paging him as well

I bought one new and rigged it back around 99 I believe ,for a customer. Came out of Canada. Very solid boats. With a warmed up 225 Johnson,I built,we were getting 98 mile an hour. I was amazed that the transom being 90ﾟ off the bottom rather than tapered,kind of unusual for outboards back then. The boat did come with a Jack plate to make the transome back tapered to mount the outboard on.
