Your PSA for the day:

Check for fuel leaks regularly. These gen3 style cool fuel pumps from Mercruiser are known for developing fuel leaks from the areas surrounding the pump head and fuel pressure regulator. It is especially common in areas with higher ethanol content in the fuels.

When experienced, the pump module should be cleaned and resealed or replaced. If you find loose paint in your fuel pressure regulator you should remove your fuel injectors and have them serviced and flush the fuel lines as well.

Some common symptoms you may experience prior to a leak is poor idle quality despite fresh spark plugs and fuel or overall poor running conditions especially when accelerating to get on plane. A fuel pressure test would show an unusually high or bouncing fuel pressure readings with these conditions.

Are there rebuild kits available for those, or do ya have to replace the entire part?

you can get some of the individual gasket/orings if you know where to look for them. Some stuff like the FPR orings, you have to buy an FPR. Some of the grommets that dont have anything to do with sealing surfaces can be cleaned and reused if they dont swell on you.

In short, no there isnt a kit but it is doable. a whole module will run you about $1800 these days and they only keep getting more expensive.

I finally had a decent enough block of weather to put the engine back in the X55 today. She was a little tight to do by myself and I wish I had a 2nd person to operate the lift but I managed, an inch at a time and about 50 trips up and down the ladder. No stair stepper for me today!

As sketchy as it sounds, you "might" be able to run a piece of twine around the lever on the forklift...
The other thing I've done, is run a chain fall off the forks. Get it somewhat centered, then lower it slowly.
I'm lazy though. Moving me up and down the ladder barefoot sucks.

Im working down on Lake Austin today. Big time money down here as compared to where Im at. Ill give you a for instance. a boat slip on lake austin for a 20ft ski boat will run you about $1,000/mo and theres years long waiting lists. the same money on Lake Travis will get you a 35-40ft boat slip with amenities. Not gonna name drop but I may or may not have seen a Hollywood A-lister bringing out the trash cans next door a little earlier

Is that just an odd timing/angle shot or is that Malibu spewing water out of the bow?

Joe Rogan or Sandra Bullock? Michael Dell's house is up on the hill and Andy Roddick's is south of the bridge.

The owner of the house with the green roof is the reason Austin has a professional rugby team.

Heres a Bravo shift cable hack for yall. Some Bravo bell housings do not have the built in boss to hold the shift cable in place when you are tightening and/or removing the lock nut that holds it to the bellhousing. This can sometimes result in twisting and damage to your cable. Its not so much a problem on your old one that youre removing but not fun if you do it to your new one going back in.

The trick is to take a medium to large size flathead screwdriver and wedge in between the hex on the cable and the outside of the bell housing like so while working the nut with your ratchet in the other hand.

whoops! thats not supposed to go there! Welp my transmission that I sent out 2 months ago is finally back from Florida, by way of California?? ya, I dont get it either😱 I did some housekeeping on the boat today as well as changing the pan gasket while the engine was out. There was no reason for it, it wasnt leaking, but my customer wanted it done.
Anywho, The transmission/vdrive unit goes back on tomorrow morning followed by sticking the engine back in the hole. Stay Tuned

Im going through a transmission today that was previously high speed shifted and supposedly just freshly rebuilt with zero run time on it. IDK Im getting more and more disappointed in my industry by a little bit every year.

I at least was able to put a fresh set of clutches in it for the guy, no charge. He just had to pay for the parts and understands that it is a tail light warranty. I normally draw the line at reseals but he is a good customer of mine and somebody didnt deliver what he paid for.

I'm assuming that is what a burnt auto tranny clutch looks like?

Today is a bit of a cool bizarre one. I'm hauling out an almost new SeaRay 350 Sundancer for outdrive and bellows work. Its a lot newer than the boats I usually work on by quite a bit. It was referred to me by another independant who didn't want to mess with the logistics of hauling it out. So hey! something nice for a change😎

Of all the things I could be doing today, I have been asked to add blue accent lights to these ice boxes and white accent lighting that will shine through the ice water in the 2 champagne buckets. Sometimes I have to slap myself and ask if I'm really doing what I'm doing. But any excuse for a job in the Air Conditioning is good by me right now.

How do you charge someone for something like this? Actual hours or a fixed bid what you think it will take you?

I knocked out a fuel pump today in addition to an adjustment on a boat I installed a drive on yesterday and 2 other check outs. I also got some more work approved and deposits taken on some work orders I put together this morning. All in all a productive day. Also, note that there is a rash of these in tank fuel pump modules going bad this year for some reason. Maybe they had a bad run during covid, idk but be ready if you have a newer boat with one of these guys in it.
