Mercruiser has officially ran out of used sbc blocks for their reman program and are transitioning. Just unwrapped this little guy for a customer.

Now, Mercruiser reman=new Dart block as far as sbc's are concerned. 496/8.1Ls have been this way for a while. This does unfortunately mean that options are limited as to how you can order one and prices have increased some too. Good with the bad....

Well I've never hoped to blow an engine in my bote.. but this gets me a little closer.

Is that one a 5.0, 5.7 or 6.2/383?

Question - Are these available in a short block? Any idea if the power is increased, or is it stock HP?

5.7

5.0 are NLA from Mercruiser and they will upsell you to a 5.7, in fuel injected applications they will reflash your ecm for you or send you a new one in that situation.

Only available in a tinned long block or various levels of partially dressed to fully dressed engines. Theres no real change in hp compared to the last generation of sbcs unless of course you are upgrading from a 5.0

I haven't ordered a 6.2 since last year but I suspect there is a shortage there too

Isn’t the 6.2 the same block with a 3.80 stroke? That’s what I thought at least, but then again I’ve been known to be wrong.😂

I'm sure a rebuildable core is part of the deal, so don't "blow it up" to bad.

😉

I believe this is the case. If you wear out yore 6.2, a 030” Overbore gets you a 383.

A 4.030" bore and a 3.800" stroke is 388 cubes.

It is actually 387.7777, but whose counting.

The Mercuriser 6.2 is a 3.752" stroke. The Mercruiser 6.2s are 377 CID stock, so when you bore them .030, you are right at 383.. well 382.8.

I figured for the gm 383, (3.8" stroke) my bad.
My squirt bötē has a short rod, 400 crank, 4.030" bore, roller cammed, 383 in it.
A 406 is next.

The Mercuriser 6.2 has an aftermarket Lunati crank with that slightly shorter stroke. I did answer in the affermative that it had a 3.8" stroke, which is not correct.

I'm sure that 383 moves out. The limiting factor with the Merc 6.2 (fuel injected) seems to be the intake, I don't know when it becomes a bottleneck. The scorpion models had a better intake but that is nearly unobtanium. It would be cool to get 400-450HP out of it.

Breck has been replacing a metric shit ton or cracked blocks over snowmageddon in TX, I'm sure that storm alone caused a big dent in supply. Every shop around the area is full for months.

Always thought of doing a bottom end build with the Edelbrock vortec aluminum heads, a Whipple on top with the cast aluminum exhaust manifolds.. would weigh about the same as the NA all iron small block and make a ton of of power.. like a mini 600 SCi :)

I don't recommend running aluminum heads unless you go closed cooling, electrolysis will really eat into the longevity of the engine otherwise

And that opens a whole other can of worms. 🤣🤣

plumbing that thing gets dicey....(expensive)

Part of the fun of a small block is trying to keep it on the cheaper side....

I still own one of the scorpion manifolds....

I have a harness, injectors, the ecu. There’s a few chiclet items that would have to be sourced, but it’s collecting dust for the time being...

Watching airboats blast around in the shallows and skirting the edges of the rivers and lakes here in the middle of Florida makes me wonder if I should start collecting the rest of the parts? 🤷🏻🤓

This was the fate of the other scorpion. 😤

I haven’t posted a pic anywhere since I took it.
What a drag.
