Airplane towing a sign over the lake?

So I’ve seen airplanes towing big signs (flags) over the lake pretty much everyday lately.
I was just watching off my back porch and it looked like a plane was struggling with a big red flag or sign into the wind. It didn’t really look like he was making any headway at all, but it was far away from me and hard to see exactly what the deal was.
Then it looked like he cut the sign loose because he had almost no airspeed.

Anyone else see this?
Like 20 minutes ago.

I saw him yesterday with a big yellow banner and I was surprised he stayed in the air he was going so slow
Wind kicking up today. Maybe it was too much for him

That’s what it looked like.
I was judging his headway against the CA mountains and it frankly looked like it wasn’t moving, and possibly losing altitude.
Then the banner sort of crumpled and started falling.
I assumed he cut it loose.

What have the banners been saying? I saw one flying around midweek but was too far to read. I thought it odd to be flying one after weekend crowds gone so my assumption is it's political.

Do they put the banner on the same treadmill when it takes off?

That actually popped in my head when I saw it, and made me laugh.

Technically speaking the wings only know what the airspeed over the surfaces is, they don’t really care about the airplane speed.
so a fixed wing plane could “hover” with enough headwind. Like a wind tunnel.
A headwind strong enough to halt forward motion also would provide lift.
But the sign is an anchor big time obviously.

The grandson was trying to read it yesterday while stuck at the light at the bridge. Lot of traffic. Could have read 100 planes

What you’re describing is called relative wind.
Air speed is constant what changes is ground speed.

If it didn't fall out of the sky...it had adequate airspeed

So if a plane is flying north, at 80mph...

And the wind is blowing south at 90 mph...

How long would it take to get from the channel to havasu springs?

Inquiring minds wanna know...

The math says the wind is pushing the plane backwards at about 10 miles an hour. So about two hours:cool:

Isn’t that like reverse for airplanes?😊

or if you like Ron white all the way to the scene of the crash🙄 When he runs out of fuel😳
And you never told us where he was flying to😝

Yes I did...

I just didn't say where he was flying from!

All I know for sure is...

I'm Still hungry, and I'm not there yet!

Reading comprehension was never my strong suit. After re-reading your postI’m thinking it would take a little over an hour. But then again math isn’t one of my strong suits either. Isn’t it about 12 or 13 miles as the crow flies?🤷 FIIK 😊

He never specified ground speed or airspeed.

If an airplane is going 80 MPH GPS then it’s covering 80 mph with an airspeed of 170 MPH into a 90 mph headwind.

80 MPH airspeed into a 90MPH headwind and he’s better be looking in his mirror for a big open field! Lol

If winds aloft are 90 MPH at 3000 ft MSL (the altitude I’m flying, wind direction 180 degrees and the aircraft is headed 360 degrees TAS for the aircraft is 80 MPH. I’m staying on the Ground.
