I was reading an online account about the construction of Hoover Dam, and it included a gallery of photos taken during the 1931-1935 construction. The photos of the young men working are striking. Those guys worked eight hour shifts around the clock with just two days off per year, Christmas and the Fourth of July. It was incredibly hard work, and pay ranged from $.50 to $1.25 per hour.

As you can see, the workers were in fantastic physical condition.

Those men worked hard. Now we figure ways to make everything easier and faster, at work or at home. Different outcomes for the people. I see the rancher kids around here, and the kids raised "in captivity", no comparison.

They worked hard because that had to. Today working hard does not have to be physical labor, but in the last 100 years people went from survival being their number 1 priory to satisfaction being their number 1 priority, with survival all but assured.

No one would even sign up to work building Hoover Dam today.

It would probably be built by Mexicans instead of Americans, today. Just saying, not knocking the Mexicans, they work their asses off, at least the ones I see.

It would be built by union labor, take 20 years, and cost 100 billion dollars if built today.

For reference, it actually cost $760 million in today’s dollars ($49M then) and took 5 years.

And it would fail spectacularly in 5 years if built by a union. They can’t even build reliable cars, I wouldn’t let them near a dam project.

I’m plenty happy Hoover remains standing because no Union hacks were involved.

I’m in a Union so I speak from experience.

Its pretty pathetic going to disneyland and half of the people there are in mobility scooters hoggin down churros and sodas. They literally cant even walk to the ride they have to ride their scooters in the line because if they stand for too long their knees will buckle. Its just disgusting how fat people are these days.

Sedentary life style and putting all that crap in your mouth, not sure people care anymore!!
This!! years ago you could walk into a casino and set a lot of attractive in shape hotties ( probably the same for girls checking out men)! Now the fat is rolling over dress, etc people just letting themselves go.......

I graduated high school in 1974. I think there may have been two fat kids in my class. There were maybe one of two guys that were 6' tall. I think it is a combination of the processed foods and sugar plus the growth hormones that they feed to out food (animals) over the last couple decades. I'm sure high school kids are much bigger now.

I live in a rural ag community and most of the kids are raised doing hard work so there isn't as many fatties around here but there are some big kids.

That’s more of a commentary on most of the people that go to Disneyland. :)

Physical "hard work" and high stress "desk pilot" will both kill you...one just leaves a less tattered corpse.

Unfortunately, now people deem the newest phone or gizmo as a need. Things can change quick, for some if not all. Let's hope not.

Just plain lazy.

People are too lazy to buy the fresh food and cook. If makes me laugh when I see a cooking show. They cook with a shit load of salt and butter, well no shit it tastes good. Try cooking something with out a lot of those and still make it taste good.

Now after you have eaten, whether is was healthy or not get off the couch and go for a walk. Go play a sport, just get moving. You will be happier.

??? Im not so sure about that, no generation since this one has had to experience poorness like them. But im sure there is number of men and women that if it got bad enough the would go to work to avoid the standing in the soup line.

There are still jobs that require/demand arduous physical labor on seasonal employment and they get filled every year.

I know i sure as heck ain't gonna let my kids see me taking a hand out because i dont want to find a job.

The youngest generations just haven't been pushed out the door and told to figure it out but if there hand was forced some shit would get done around here.

Dams are being constructed all over the country by union and non-union contractors today, it is impressive and difficult work depending on the location. None are failing spectacularly as you infer, my company manages the construction of these projects so I too speak from experience.

I’m talking that job and those conditions. It is simply not happening.

There won’t be poorness like that again. Look what happened with Covid. We printed money and handed it out.

I can build a house from scratch by myself, I can muttle my way through the entire process and the end result is I will have shelter for myself and my family, I will have created value in asset that is a direct result of my labor and capital investment. I don’t think that there is a large segment of todays society that can say that and do that. I’ve acquired these skills by working to survive and not knowing shit when I was younger, I refer to these skills as an accidental skill set, one day you wake up and realize you know some shit, you have aptitude to self educate and the ability to navigate your life where ever you desire.

Our society does not encourage this type of activity, everything is streamlined for productivity, profits, and ease of use. As well there is a significant segment of the population that has figured out they can vote for free shit and they are doing just that. Now before this goes red or blue, it’s a well known fact that both sides of that isle took as much PPP money as they could get their hands on recently. Our society has safety nets and they are being abused with no consequences for the abusers other than to become fat and lazy.

Interesting concept, but what conditions will arise when it comes time to pay off the debt associated with that, and other, printing of money? I'm no economist, but it seems like a house of cards.

I'm with @Nanu/Nanu on this. A lot could step up when needed. How many? I don't know, but probably not a huge percentage. Some here have, and probably still do, physically taxing jobs that others here could not. Some may be able to with effort, and others would flatly refuse to try.

It's human nature. It's amazing what can be done by a guy wanting to feed his kids. Some here have lived it to some extent, others have not. Motivation comes from all different directions.

You just print more money.... like we have done for 50+ years.

Like I said, almost no one in America would work in the Hoover Dam working conditions from 100 years ago for those wages. It could never get done in 5 years, and not for that price, even adjusted for today's dollars.

If/when it comes cashing down, there is not going to be anyone to pay you anything anyway. We will be on the barter system.

From the . Gov - Margarine was healthy, eggs were bad, whole / natural milk was bad, bread with preservatives was healthy, red meat was bad, cereal that came in a box with a long half life was healthy ....... Now it's concentrated modified plant based is healthy, "milk" with more nuts squeezed into it than a human would it in a year is healthy etc . Basically any production item with a long shelf life is what you will be told to eat. The side effects from getting rid of "bad" cholesterol with the statin drugs which are practically mandated to be provided are scary as well, and the data is starting to pile up.
TV commercials for drugs to take on top of all your other drugs for the same ailment are the norm too rather than diet + exercise. Of course they are shown to be taken by a same sex or interracial couple which is never a white guy as the husband lol .

Well said. I do the hard jobs sometimes to understand why paying someone to do it is worth it. Building race cars and fabrication is fun to me. Although I'll never do head gaskets on a Duramax again...Over $200 for 1k of 9mm. I'll roll my own. Cooking, I enjoy as much as racing and fabrication and like racing it started with the best materials. Can't say that with most restaurants. Loaded with crap oils and sugars to make them taste better. Italian and europeans have this nailed. Fresh and minimal is best. Diet is a HUGE reason why everyone is so out of shape. Bigger is better to a lot of folks.

On the politics side of things. I'm arriving at a thought process where both sides are the enemy. The left has nothing right and the right has nothing left. One side wants cheap votes, the other side wants cheap labor. We've been sold out. We all take a bite out of the shit sandwich so "they" get what they want.

And when did we pay people to go to work in the Great Recession, or Covid, or any recession in the last 40 years? We just gave people money. There was no unemployment insurance safety net 100 years ago.

The government just had people dig a hole and fill it up again and paid them. That was a much better system, as it kept work ethic at least.

We aren't going back to that. It is easier to just send checks.

Food pyramid was nothing more than a consumerism clap trap from food industry using government to influence the "slobs" to buy their slop. I know everyone has heard it a million times but look into what "eating clean" actually means. It's not light foods with high fructose corn syrup replacing fats. Or industrial waste products like cotton seed oils in our food to make it cheaper but is "heart healthy" in a static test.

The more you ask questions and learn the more you realize most of us consume garbage.

What was it again that pulled us from the Great Depression?

If history repeats itself, it will get ugly.

I find myself doing the hard jobs now because I’m either too poor to pay someone to do it, or too smart to get ripped off paying some one to do it. 😂🤦‍♂️😂

How long did it take to build the dam, powerplant, and appurtenant works? Five years. The contractors were allowed seven years from April 20, 1931, but concrete placement in the dam was completed May 29, 1935, and all features were completed by March 1, 1936
