How do I know if my mercathode system is working right ?

These are what my anodes off my drive look like.. Does this mean its working, or not working?

There's white stuff all over the exposed metal parts of my drive..

To be sure you don't have any serious problems, you'll want to ensure that you don't have a break in the bonding system starting from the rear of the engine through the transom assembly down to the stern drive.

The best way to understand how & if the system works is to read section 7 (Corrosion Protection) in your mercruiser stern drive service manual which would be either #'s 11, 28 or 39 depending on your year, or more importantly your drive or T/A serial number.

This should make it easier for you though,:)

Do you boat in both fresh and salt water? Knowing what water's you play in would help determine what mercruiser anode material you would want to purchase. There are three main alloys used as galvanic anodes, magnesium, aluminium and zinc.

P.S, Mercruiser sells black touch up paint called phantom black.

Hope this helps, Good luck.:)

Wow, thanks for the info FT. I'll go through the manual and check it all like it says.

I have the black paint from Merc. But that shit just comes back off the next time the boat sees any run time.. I found a primer they also sell with it. Maybe that will help.

Don't paint your anodes! They won't work.

Electrical contact is essential

There is an unfortunate misconception that a sacrificial anode can be mounted anywhere, even hung over the side on a string, and it will still perform its appointed duty. That is dead wrong!

For a zinc anode to provide any protection, it must be in electrical contact with the metal being protected. The conductivity of the water is not adequate. We need low-resistance, metal-to-metal contact--either by mounting the zinc directly to the metal being protected or by connecting the two with a wire. A hanging anode can provide protection if it is connected by a wire to the metal being protected.

Where the zinc is mounted directly to the protected metal--bolted to the side of a metal rudder, for example--it is essential to make sure the surface under the zinc is bare and bright before the anode is installed. This is to ensure good electrical contact.

No paint

Sacrificial anodes cannot perform their function unless they are exposed. Putting paint on an anode smothers it, rendering it useless. Never coat anodes with bottom paint, or anything else.
