Yes they both perished. That crash and the horrific video, is basically what changed the landscape of shoot outs. They are now 3/4 of a mile instead of a mile.

Beyond Terrible Video. Any idea of what top speeds could be obtained at the Havasu Shoot Out if it was a full mile? Some are already pushing 200. Was Spirit of Qatar’s 244 done on a full one mile course?

I remember when that happened . . . the sound of those motors is so haunting.
The fiberglass crunching is chilling also.

It doesn't sound like the sticks ever get pulled back, and how does one save the boat after the air out starts happening. Immediate trim down but is it too late by then?

At those speeds you aren’t saving it.

I remember watching their run at lake of the ozarks that year thinking they were on the very edge.

the boating community hit a bad few years around that time. RIP again to Garth and Jim
They were innovative and had consistent 200mph passes in mind. They had several 194-196 Loto passes if I remember, I’ll look.
