It's the same old story that seems to be picking up steam. My wife and I are looking to relocate from Irvine, CA, and are looking at the Flower Mound/South Lake/Highland Villiage areas. We are in our early /mid 30s, no kids, and make solid upper-middle-class money. We've been looking at houses in South OC for a year, and what you get for $1MM is a joke. It's not even fun to look anymore, and a $750k mortgage doesn't sound appealing to me. Not to mention the terrible politics and laws in this state.
A seed was planted in our head when our friend's family relocated to Flower Mound 2 years ago. They went from a 2 bedroom apartment with their 3 kids, to a beautiful 3,200 square foot house in Flower Mound. My buddy's job was transferred to Coppell, so it was forced, but it has been a huge lifestyle upgrade for them. Less stress, more free money, kids have their own rooms, better schools, etc. etc. We visited them a few weeks ago and loved the area. We went to 5-6 open houses in the $550-$800k range and were blown away that we could get our dream house for the price of a two-bedroom townhouse here in Irvine. My wife has a very good chance of transferring her job as there is an office nearby, and she does not manage a team. I manage a team, so it may be harder for me to work remotely...even though the CEO and CFO have recently moved out of state to work remotely. Our plan is to head back out there in late Nov/Dec to check it out again in a different season.
-For those that live there, how do you like it? Is this area still Conservative? I'd rather not move to an area and have it turn out to be another CA.
-For those that relocated, what was your thought process, and how did you justify the move? We would be leaving our families as they all live in Southern California but would have a support system in place with my wife's best friend in Flower Mound, and my best friend moving 3 hours away in Yukon in November.
