Another one of these threads........................🙄OK

Listen, if you are down there pulling Quads, a toyhauler, toys etc etc, in a new Truck with US Plates, just assume you may be a target.

The story makes it act like they were taken to a Warehouse by the Cartel and chainsaw cut up into small pieces. No....... they got jacked. Plain and Simple.

If you showboat down there, you are asking for trouble. I'm sorry, you need to blend in. Leave the toys at home. Blend in, Be Humble. Dress appropriately, that means no shorts for guys, (Puta), NO Fucking Flip Flops. Use your head. Keep your $1000 iphone in your pocket.

I'm sure a Go Fund me has been setup for the idiots who were too cheap in this story to buy Mex Insurance.
Sounds like a nice vacation . Dont shower for a week . No teeth brushing . Have only 1 shitty meal a day while you hang on the side walk so you can blend in . Sounds like a dream vacation ?

Or you just go somewhere else. Why the fuck am I gonna go to Mexico and hang out on a beach and not be able to wear shorts and flip flops. I’m a free man, Im not gonna go someplace where my choice of shoes might get me or my family killed. Fuck Mexico. I grew up in AZ and have been to Mexico A LOT but not anymore. I love the Mexican people, I speak fluent Spanish but Mexico is a free for all. I know people that have lived in Tijuana their entire life that got out and won’t go back.

I agree. I don't work for the tourism Dept. of Mexico. Just letting people know if they visit, try not to look like an Arrogant American. That goes for any foreign country, especially third world with a corrupt govenrment.

My head is on a swivel whenever I go, 24/7. But I am also not going to Cabo or major resorts where you can relax a bit more. Even then, you have to assume you are a target.

We heard that info from Weatherman, but it was unclear if the helicopter was part of a race crew and never found out this info until you just posted it.

The problem with Baja Mexico now a days is the 1 million plus Americans who live there... Not to mention the 350 million people who travel across the border there every year...

The Mexico–United States border is the most frequently crossed border in the world, with approximately 350 million documented crossings annually. It is the tenth-longest border between two countries in the world.

From what I understand the helo was not with a team just spectating flying to low above the TTs and hit a power line

Still great fun. My son also drove an 8x truck, but broke down 40 miles into the run. Had a guy on a M/C endo in front of our pit, and got hurt bad. He asked that I drive the bike to his pit 2 miles down the course, where another rider was waiting to continue. You should have seen their faces when I drove up to their pit! Their rider was tossed into a pick up and followed closely behind, where he received medical attention. I guess that was my 2 mile Baja 1000 race!

The Helo was only about 50 ft off the ground when he went over us around RM 90... I could pick the two guys out of a line up they were so close, once they flew a bit farther south past Valle T, the pilot never considered there would be large power lines parallel to Hwy 3 and bought the farm....

My closest friend of some 40 plus years has family in Mexico. He has traveled there frequently to see them since we met. He repeatedly asked Cindy and I to go with him and we would see the "real" Mexico. We relented about 12 years ago and went.
We loved it, fell in love with the "real" Mexican People and they treated us like family. We stayed with his family on their properties and could not have had a better time.
We returned 3 times. This was in the State of Colima.
My friends older brother lives down there part time, he was in the travel industry for 30 years and consulted for hotel chains and other resort properties.
About two years ago we were at a party with my friend and his brother, and one of the family who had come up to visit.
The conversation was that it was no longer safe to come down, and that, while we would always be welcome and they would see to our safety as best they could, the family (and it is a large one) would not suggest we come back.
My friend hasn't been back, either.
It is a damn shame.
If you have ever had a chance to get to know the Mexican people as I have, you cannot help but fall in love with the culture and their hospitality. Once they know who you are, and if you come with no attitude, they bring you in and you are never forgotten. This "Mexico" isn't one you see from cruise ships or the tourist enclaves, this is the real deal.
I miss those people, I miss them a lot, and I hope the day comes that we can go back and see them again, but I am not optimistic that is will happen again in my lifetime.
The corruption in government down there has increased dramatically in the past 20 years and long established families with businesses are used to dealing with it...but not at this level. They are the people that keep the economy running down there, and they are losing their asses right now. The businesses that are part of the tourism industry are struggling mightily, and the government makes them pay their employees even when they have been laid off...in other words the business pays the unemployment check directly.
Insane.
I have memories and stories of experiences that would blow your minds but they are not to be shared on the internet, sorry to be so cryptic but it is what it is. We still exchange Christmas cards with several of the folks down there.
It is a damn shame.

Yup. You ever see Mexican guys wearing shorts? They believe that is reserved for the putas to show their legs. Not men.

Cut Off Jeans for swimming are the exception.
This is Funny. I have 40 employees, 90% are first generation in the US from Mexico. I wear shorts here in NM from the first 80 degree day in spring until the first snow in the fall. There has never been one that's said anything about it. After the first few triple digit days of summer, about half of them are in shorts. There's only a couple I can think of that I've never seen in shorts in the summer, but they are the mid 20's guys that wear boots that curl up at the tip like they're elves or something.

You do all inclusive , stay on the property, and only go to and from the airport on a shuttle where the driver and passengers are logged/chartered by the resort. Cabo is about it even with those restrictions that you have a chance.

We (EOD / FBI community) were warned and basically strongly advised to not go south of the border back in 2011.
Advisory has not changed since.

Colima was never safe. I have family in Tecoman and remember the days of CDS and los zetas as a kid. At the end of the day, it all came down to who you knew and what they were involved with.

I’m suppose to go to Jalisco in February and make my way down to tecoman, Puebla and Córdoba

I don't mean here in the US. This pertains to In Country in Mexico. I have alot of mexican friends here in the states that wear shorts as well.

And the beach and gym is OK in Mexico, thats an exception.

Just what I have been told and from my experience traveling there, including as far as GDL. When I am there I try to blend in as much as possible. un tucked Polo Shirt, Jeans and I grow out a thick Mexican mustache.

Extra Points for an Authentic Polo :p

There's a lot of experienced Mexico travelers posting on here ..... I'll jump in. My wife and I gave some thought to buying in a gated community in Baja just south of LaFonda [Rosarito area] back around 1995-2000 but sometime around then a bunch of dudes showed up and seized the properties at gunpoint and it was always a 99 year land lease or some such thing back then. Years later rumor was you could now own the properties but I was spooked. I've been pulled over driving back at night too many times to mention... it got to be almost normal to expect to have to pay the bribe. Then around 2007-2009 there was plenty of press around cartel activities and chopping heads near borders so I stopped going altogether. I went down maybe in April recently just for a day trip and bought a few items but I gotta say I'm not going again anytime soon after reading these stories.

When they instituted the "Dial 072" citizen complaint hotline years back in Baja to stop all the cops from taking bribes, I knew all the blue haired ex-pats had pussified mexico....

Maybe don't really remember. I was too busy begging for my kids lives to remember

Point taken. I was down there with a bike team so we were already through there but from what I remember it was on the road into Mike's not to far off the highway. There were some videos of it on Thumpertalk and I think Race Dezert when it happened.

Thats exactly were it was... You know how the course normally runs on the Northeast side of the 3 out of Ensenada. Then sometimes it breaks East (Left) and goes over the summit.. That year it stayed straight heading due south where it has to cross over the 3 and heads up towards mikes and horse power ranch... Well the 3 is the major corridor to the east to San Felipe and a bunch of Transmission/Electric lines are logically in the right of way easement. Its is the easiest place for people to drive on the paved road up that way and huge crowds gather there.... Most likely juicing up the cowboy behind the stick on the Helo for his final demonstration of low altitude flying...

I used to pit for the Mc Millin team in the Baja races and one year they had a major altercation.

One of the crew members who also brings his wife and 2 daughters because they all help and enjoy it, were pulling a shop trailer. After the race he needed to get back and left before the caravan of trucks, etc. He was driving an F350 towing a 32' enclosed trailer and was stopped by "federales". At first, they just made them get out of the truck while they trashed the interior. (we used to just give them t-shirts and stickers and off we went) Next thing, all of them were cuffed with zip ties and had hoods placed over their heads. They were put in the back of a van and driven for over an hour. When they stopped, they had their clothes cut off by their captors and they were led away. With the hoods still on, they were forced to lay on the ground and they feared the worst. Then, the "federales" just hopped in the van and sped off. They were left in their underwear in the Mexican desert. The Dad was able to break his zip tie and get all of the hoods off. They then walked a couple of miles to a house, and from their were rescued. The truck, trailer and thousands in tools were never seen again. Safe to say he stopped pitting in Mexico and if I remember correctly, the Mc Millin team may have even taken a year or two off from Mexico. Now the rule is that everyone sticks together.

I think the last time I did a Baja race was maybe 2003 but I do not go to Mexico at all anymore.
You sir, have some bad information in your post. As the Mother in this family i would appreciate you not making OUR story into something it was not.

Glad that this family only lost a truck and some toys, things could have gone a lot worse.

Lazy bastards.

Thank you for posting. The person that claimed to know so much knows nothing. Didn't respond to the PM asking if we know them. I should not let it bother me but it does.

And Beerrun I love our new home and everything we have made it. Sorry this has come up again and that people feel its okay to turn our story into something it wasn't. I love you.
Like I said earlier, I'm so glad you guys made it out, so scary to read let alone live. You have one hell of a strong family and bond.

It sucks it keeps coming up but the story just might change the mind of a family about going to Mexico and save their lives. I've been to Mexico 3 times the last time was in '93 and I don’t feel like I need to go back and your survival story just enforces that. The stories of survival usually keep surfacing while the others don't. I hope your experience has detoured others.

I can shed some light on the insurance side of this. Even if they had bought mexican insurance, most of those policies are minimum liability only policies to appease the federalies so they still would not have been paid out. Most of the halfway decent insurance companies in the states cover you up to 75 miles into Mexico just like you are in in the states.

Side note, my family started going to the same place @mesquito_creek has a place back in the mid 60s. They bought a place down there in the early 70's and had it up through the early 2000's. As far as I know, no one in the family has been back since about '07 due to fear of being a target with a motorhome and boat in tow.

@mesquito_creek you may like the below picture, my family's setup down there back in 1968

It happens every couple of years. I think the last good size development that was taken over was down in San Felipe last year.
I remember that. Huge retirement community where hundreds of americans built houses & then the federales kicked them out at gunpoint.

Sounds familiar.

"It was just before noon on a Saturday in April when the armed men started taking up positions in the high desert sun.

Kitted out in camouflage and tactical gear, they had driven hundreds of miles across the country to make a stand in a dry stretch of scrubland in southeastern Nevada.

Men calling themselves Oath Keepers had come from Arizona and New Hampshire, joining a militia group from Montana, Operation Mutual Aid; and members of the Three Percenters from Idaho and Oregon. This was the first time these self-styled “patriots” had come together in one place, to confront what they all believed was the growing tyranny of the federal government.

Brandon Rapolla, a Marine veteran from Oregon, was one of them. “I’m a devout Christian,” he said. “I prayed upon it very heavily. And within less than a 24-hour period, I got my gear ready and headed down there.”

They had come to defend Cliven Bundy."

My family has condos in Rosarito and some very nice properties in Jalisco. Both my parents say I have no business down there and I haven’t been since I was probably 10!

Last trip I drove down to San Quentin in summer 2018 to do some fishing. I did take my old Nissan Pathfinder to try to not stand out though it had Cali plates on it. Stayed 4 days and drove back but I remember on our last day of fishing we still had another night left to stay but I was like lets get the fuck out of here cause there was really nothing for us to do there at night. Made it to the border right at sunset. I've done lots of Cabo trips and La Paz, Los Barilles etc I've never really had any trouble with the people down there but I stay in the tourist areas. My daughter is getting married in Cancun in February next year she has rented an oceanfront house for us all to stay at and she will have a small family ceremony.

Listen to some interviews with Ed Cauldron, former high level security/intelligence from Mexico. He pretty much lays it out for you. Does say there are some places that are,for most part safe. However if you travel to areas that are controlled by cartels,Good Luck. There's little of no law in all of Mexico, only areas that the cartels dont want a lot of press so they are safer than others.

Entering Mexico:

As you step out of the USA you loose your civil rights - As you step into Mexico you lose your human rights.

So what do the trophy truck guys do with millions of dollars in rigs and trucks? Wouldn't they be prime targets?

Been to Tecoman once. We split most of our time between a home near the beach in Manzanillo and downtown in city of Colima, or up at a family horse ranch on the Volcano. Our first trip was around 1990. Yes, it does come down to who you know in almost all of Mexico outside the tourist zones. It is just a damn shame that it has come to this. One of the best vacation days of my life was celebrating their Independence day in September in the town square in Colima, right across the street from the Governor's mansion, watching the fireworks go off, then people scattering because of thunderstorms, then returning as soon as they ended and starting the party all over for the ringing of the bell. The people down there that we know are just wonderful, and the memories we have are amazing. Most importantly the relationships we built are treasured.
Best damn tequila I have ever had in my life...but that truly is a story for another time and place, LOL.

Thinking of the "sketchiness" of Mexico...A gentleman I met through the car world was a rancher. Big time cattle operation. He's a little guy, had always seen him in typical cowboy gear, blue jeans, button up and a hat...not the shiny buckle types. At the Sacramento NSRA show he and Brizzio flew in on his Lear. I was shocked as hell.
A couple years ago I asked a guy we know in common how he was doing. I guess his home in Texas is a compound, heavily guarded. His own brother stripped him of the legitimate business by illegitimate means. I guess he's still set up ok financially, but can never go back to Mexico. Sad really. Money and greed, in his family, and in the country. Here, it seems if you are well off, or perceived as such, you are a target. There, it has a whole different meaning.

I was the GM for 2 big plants in Mexico, T.J. for Fisher Price and Barbie play sets and Monterrey for Power Wheels ride on cars. Well run plants with great people. We always had armed guards with us coming and going, and no off the reservation excursions. All business, complete the task and leave. No issues.

I use to go to Mexico a lot in the past. San Felipe every spring break. Rosarito, Ensenada and Cabo too many times to count. Almost bought a few condos in Rosarito Beach. A man I consider my father was born and raised in Tecate (still owns property there) and he went with us most of the time.

He told me back in 2007 or so to stop going as it wasn't safe enough anymore and he didn't want to worry about us.

Only time I was nervous was when I was restoring my 68 Camaro back in 2000ish. Papa's nephew did body work in Tecate. We head down to leave the Camaro to get the body done. Get through the border and drop the car off. Stop to get tacos like we always do. Guy comes up to me and says "you were the guy who has the Camaro". Before I could answer papa comes back from the bathroom starts talking to him in Spanish. Long story short is this guy had look outs at the border and would be informed about anything good coming over the border. Papa told him who his nephew was and all was good, but I was still nervous about leaving the car there. We went back to his nephews and told him what happened and he said not to worry. Don't think I ever got the true story from the nephew, but nothing ever happened. Damn I miss those Tacos.

Lazy bastards.

This story is terrifying. Holy shit. I couldn’t imagine... so glad they made it out of that shit hole.

I’ve done the all inclusive route in Cancun a few years ago and liked it a lot. Stayed in large groups, and tried to play it smart, but was always worried about our safety.

Wife’s parents have a condo in Zihuatanejo that they love vacationing at, but I’ve told my wife we’re never going. Wayyy too close to the violence.
