So my 15 year old daughter wanted to go to a protest. So I took her to one a few days ago. There were 20-30 protestors, mostly HS kids, on each corner of a large intersection. I noticed an older guy, at least 55, wearing a MAGA hat, holding a huge US flag, US flag t shirt, with a sign saying “God bless the police”, the whole bit. He was harassing the young ladies and just being a total dick. One girl Who was maybe 15 held up her sign, her shirt cane up a bit, and the dude yells “yea show your tits!!” Things were getting tense, the Sheriff dept was nearby but they weren’t even watching what was going on. So I needed to do two things - get the dude’s attention off the young girls, and get the cops attention on him, because shit was starting to get out of hand. So I grabbed a sign and sharpie, wrote “ASSHOLE =>” on it and stood right next to him. Well he didn’t appreciate that, so we start exchanging words. He was the kinda guy that you can just tell had an affinity for meth and pills. He takes out his phone and says he’s going to take my picture and sticks his phone in my face. I slap his phone away and tell him to get the fuck away from me. He then bitch-slaps me on the neck. Some teenage girl picks up her skateboard and swings it at him, making contact with his mid-section. The other protestors get between us. Even though he surely would have kicked my ass, I was so wound up I was ready to take him on. But I really didn’t want my daughter to see me get my ass kicked, and I didn’t want any of the HS kids to get involved. So I took a breath and walked over to the cops and told them what happened. When I walked back to pick up my daughter, the douchebag had fled. Mission accomplished.

To me, you come off as the instigator in the situation. Now you are complaining about his response.

Though Creepy Old Guy was saying inappropriate things (which would anger me also), the girls were in no danger from said Creepy Old Guy. You chose to instigate by making a sign and sticking it in his face. Then committing Assault & Battery on him when he pulled out his phone (I wouldn't want to have my picture taken either, so you know where I am coming from).

The rules of these protests are NO touchy touchy...you break that rule, and you better expect a retaliation. If I was in your shoes, I would have gone over and said something to the guy, or just ignored him. I NEVER would have made an Asshole sign and shoved it in his face. Who wants their hands tied up holding a sign if things do go south? (I apologize for the long response).
