The wife and I along with another couple want to go over for a couple days, none of us have ever been. I'm sure many of you have gone, so where to stay and what to do?

Eat, drink, and spend quality time with the mrs, that’s pretty much it. You need a golf cart two hours max, maybe you golf, maybe you dive, I hear the zip line is ok but the real fun is at the Isthmus. They have a greasy spoon, a nice restaurant, and a great outdoor bar with great people. Try a buffalo milk just because you’re there. I’m not sure how you get there from Avalon without a boat but it’s probably possible.

Crazy high on rentals/hotel rooms.... I would plan two nights...max. Golf cart for two hours is plenty.... yes the give DUI for golf carts too... you can really enjoy the town after the last boat leaves...... and since cruise ships don't go right now..... it will be really nice.

This sums it up perfectly. I spent a ton of time over there when I was younger on a mooring ball. I've got a headcount of 5 people in the drink getting off the dingy after a few buffalo milks.

My wife and I just got back two hours ago. We stayed at the Hotel Metropole. We have some friends that live there fulltime, he’s a Deputy Sheriff on the Island and his wife is a Dispatcher. We had a great time, it feels like you are in another part of the world.

Stayed at the Hamilton Cove condos the one time we stayed over there. Great view and most units come with a golf cart. The units were kinda pricy but it was worth it.

Make sure you wear your drinking shoes, plenty of good places to hang out. Descanso Beach is a cool spot, Steve’s(not Dave’s) is a good steakhouse, Bluewater is a nice spot as well as the Blue Rose. Catalina is a beautiful place.

zip lining was not spectacular, but okay. the hummer ride over to the other side of the island with lunch at the airport was kinda cool.....and cold in the evenings. The place we stayed in had a golfcart with parking in town which was really nice. We took in a movie at the casino. We took a bunch of walks just to see the town and surrounding areas. Lot sof good food. We stayed 5 days. If we had stayed longer we would have gone to the istmus or stayed a night there, and I would have chartered a fishing trip just for fun.

We have had a house there since the 70's. It isn't what it use to be. First, it is expensive and has been crowded. My mom still lives there so we go over on a regular basis. They just redid the Atwater and I hear it is nice. I prefer the Metropole. Our friends use to own the Portofino, but sold it and don't recall the new name, but it was very nice.

You can rent the little carts, but I might suggest taking a tour. There are tours that are short around town to longer tours that go to the airport in the sky and I believe the isthmus. Do have a buffalo milk, or two. The wife and I use to drive down there with friends all the time. If you go Inland, you will see buffalo and perhaps deer and the occasional island fox.

Of course, there are the boat tours and the glass bottom boats. Again, I think some go down to the isthmus. You will find many places to drink along the main street if that is your desire.

I believe that Steve's steakhouse is one of the best restaurants in town and you can eat on the beach. M's is supposed to be good , but I have not eaten there. If you want to get away from the downtown crowd, go out to the nickel by the heliport. I like Antonio's. Just a heads up, many of the restaurants are owned by the same people.

Want a drink at a local bar, go to the Marlin.

Just a few thoughts,

Cheers, Steve

This... It's a nice place and yeah they come with Golf carts which is really nice to have in Avalon. You can play golf at CA's first golf course in Avalon. But the best thing I've done in Catalina was to get a private island tour from a third generation Catalina resident. His name is "Chip" and he owns a company called "Wet Spot". The tour was incredible and you learn so much about the island.

That’s cool. My mother’s father was a deputy sheriff on the island as well.

My niece lives there as well. We choose to stay at the Pavilion. Again not cheap but like being right on the walk way. Nice amenities as far as full on breakfast and wine and cheese every night.(Pre covid anyway)
Descanso Beach is were we normally kick it and drink to much. You can get a private cabana or just a spot in front of the bar on the beach.
As said Zip line is fun but nothing over the top.
We have at least one meal at the Blue water. And usually a lunch on the pier at Avalon Seafood & fish market with cold one or two.
last couple times we made sure and do some parasailing

Francis O’Hare aka Frank O’Hare aka Francis Hare aka Frank Hare. Not sure which spelling he used at the time. Family was Irish so they took the O off the name at some point to keep from being known as micks.

hit the marlin. i have only been over once, but we got there at 8am had a decent breakfast, cant remember where. took the tour and hit a couple other spots, we spent the majority of the day sitting in the marlin. really cool bartender (think he may own it) and a lot of regulars coming in and out. what hit me as kind of odd, was people kept bringing in food, almost like a pot luck. bartender said its a pretty normal deal there.

Kind of like island time, hang out, eat and drink

Don't know if you're interested but there are often events on the island .. was there a couple years ago when the Jazz festival was happening at the Casino.. Our ABnB host gave us tickets....

Very cool event.....well worth it

Check the calendar to select your preferable time there
