Celebrating 75 years of USA Water Ski one photo at a time... "The 'Fastest' Nationals Ever" reads the headline from the article in the October/November 1967 issue of "The Water Skier," the first year that water ski racing was part of the water ski national event as a "demonstration" sport. A special AWSA committee had been studying the possibility of adding ski racing to the AWSA "family" for two years and ski racers were hoping for a favorable reaction by officials to their demonstration. Apparently a favorable impression was made because AWSA began sanctioning race events two years later. Today's racers will be certain to get a chuckle out of the mention of the cost of the boats in the article ($10,000 SK Class rigs). In the picture, Skip Volk's Red Hornet boat with the race teams lined up on the dock.
