Just passed a bad rollover accident, 40 West about 33 miles East of Barstow. Victims ejected, CHP just arriving on scene. Looked pretty rough.

1PM

Traffic is gonna be bad both directions for a long time.

Wear your seatbelts!

Prayers, This is a fear of mine. Look at the arrival time. CHP alone is an hour out from when it happened. Even Cal Fires line is busy when they tried to call. Its no mans land out there and help is so far way, we have to be vigilant! Scary Scary stuff, I cant imagine the wait.

Similar deal happened right past Water Road a week ago. Was stopped 30 mins. It was an hour from when the accident was reported to when the chopper got there.

I must’ve just missed it. Driving back to SoCal from Havasu today and went through that area about the same time. Traffic doing 90mph intermixed with an endless line of Semi’s doing 60-65mph constantly trying to pass each other. I call it the Havasu 250 because it is like a NASCAR race out there. Be careful

CHP was there in 26 minutes.

It’s not uncommon to wait for an hour (or a LOT more) for fire department personnel on the 40 or the 62.

@FlyByWire , is this part of your area? I always think of just speeding tickets, but damn, must have to see some ugly things out there.

Now I come in from the other side of 40. Still some idiots, but not nearly as fast. I think through the desert, everyone figures there's nothing to see, and no reason to pay attention.

No this was in Barstow’s area. Two flown out from what I saw.

Yeah, extremely ugly things happen when a car starts overturning at 80+ MPH.

Yup, folks drive like shit. Bad things happen. Driving most cars above 80mph and any slight mis step and you are out of control instantly. Lots of people have no idea. Cars are so quiet these days, you look down and go oh fuck I'm going 90... Back in the day my shitbox would rattle your teeth out above 75.. You knew you were going fast.... Not anymore...

Don't forget cars are more safer today, so the driver doesn't have to be.

I've been in a rollover at 55-60...off the 210fwy. Four weeks in ICU, the first few of many surgeries, etc. I was in great shape and 28 years old. I can't imagine adding another 20-30mph. Physics really suck at that point.

Glad you didn't have to see this one. Unfortunately others did, and you'll probably have to see more in your career :(

CalFire was pretty busy during this time.

When I was in Carson our phone rang and when I answered it my dispatcher said "You're the closest unit, 77's", I said "Where the hell is that" and he hung up. Our pagers went off and it was at the launch ramp at Pyramid Lake, prop strike. I got on the radio and told them we were over an hour out, call LAFD. We were canceled in 5 min as they ended up flying the patient out, I knew they were going to do that anyway.

Glad you came out of yours OK.

I’m not a smart guy in a scientific way, but coming to the middle of nowhere after working a big city was an eye opener in terms of what can happen to steel and human beings when exposed to those kinds of forces. I’ve seen people thrown from their cars that were measured in feet into the hundreds.

@FlyByWire where do you work?

I pretty much bring it up every year. As was said, it can take an hour plus for us To get to some of these areas on the 40/15/62. I, personally, did a 2 month assignment in Needles when we put Paramedics on the engine there. It was crazy the response times we had to get to some legit accidents. Thereare some big “holes” in the desert as far as getting help to you if bad stuff happens. Our department has tried to get the board of supervisors to do something about coverage. It appears another Paramedic Engine company MAY happen in NewBerry Springs area (I15 & Harvard), later this year. Maybe. That would help this part of the 15/40 and take the load off of Baker and Helendale stations.

A buddy of mine (Steve) was coming back from the river today, west bound on the 40 and witnessed the dirt cloud (accident in progress) about 1/4 mile up the road. Steve said the vehicle involved in the roll over was actually going east bound on the 40 when it lost control . Steve immediately new that what he was witnessing was going to be a pretty gruesome accident scene. Both Hispanic man and woman were ejected (as noted), the man was awake but complaining of stomach pains (possibly internal injuries) while calling out for his wife. The woman was lying face down and knocked out, she was breathing heavily when she finally awoke several minutes later. My buddy said that one of the guys on the scene may have possibly been an off duty paramedic, while on the phone my buddy heard him giving vitals of the two occupants...

This always worries me when driving long roads. I consider that I’m a safe driver but you can end up being involved with a driver that is traveling so fast. People don’t realize that medical aid can be at least two hours away. Probably more if a helicopter is not available. I come to realize that when you speed you probably save 20 to 30 minutes on a 300 mile run. Not worth getting killed or hurting others .

Yes, there was an off duty firefighter on scene, he requested a life flight.

Mine was self inflicted stupidity. I fell asleep. Luckily, the old truck only did 65-70 tops. The kicker was the 90ft drop off the road. Nosed in, end over end. I woke up next to my truck, within 10ish ft. Either the 20+ year old seat belt failed, my body crumpled enough to fold out or my guardian angle did overtime...the lid of the old crew cab was flat on the ground. All the ribs I broke made the pattern of the seatbelt, a broken neck, skull fractures and a shattered shoulder blade...yes, I was fairly fuckered up for a time.

Safer, newer cars or not, people get too comfortable at higher speeds. Like pointed out above, a new car will cruise at 90. People depend on antilock brakes and stability control, but don't realize they even have it. The cars are meant to lessen the impact on the body, but only to an extent.

It definately looked bad when we passed. The female was face up and bystanders were helping her. I called 911 to make sure somebody was already notified but at that point CHP was like 5 minutes away.

We slowed down a few mph for the rest of the drive home, it makes you think twice about pushing the speedo...

We always say a prayer before leaving on any trip, always asking God to keep us safe to and from all of our destinations.

Last night when coming home from the river all of a sudden a bus stopped in the middle of the 15 freeway in the Rancho Cucamonga area. Just seconds after I pass the bus I see one of it's tires rolling down the freeway at a pretty good clip, a near miss. I recently saw in another post what hitting a rogue wheel can do to a vehicle. The Power of Prayer: Thank God for keeping us safe and watching over us...

People just don't get it when it comes to driving at eighty or more. Like said before just a little input on the steering wheel can send you out of control at those speeds. We drove monthly to our place in havasu for fifteen years before finally moving out here permanently. We have seen some bad ones, just about two months ago the big rig accident that I know was fatal for the driver who rear ended another big rig.The one that was really an eye opener was seeing a cloud explode in the ditch on the opposite side of the highway near Goffs road. A compact car came out of that cloud going end over end fifteen feet in the air. I was stunned seeing that and can't imagine the outcome.Between the idiot big rig drivers swerving all over and the speed demons I'm glad I won't be doing that drive anymore.

People don't really understand ground covered but being a racer I do, at 80mph you are covering 120 feet per second, 150 feet per second at 100mph. Get a tape measure and look at that, shit can go wrong in a hurry at those speeds.

The 80+mph crowd scares me. So many variables that can cause an accident going that speed vs. 70mph and shit gets worse the faster you go. Blow outs, road debris, a speed limit driver changing lanes but is not expecting the vehicle approaching in the mirror to be going 80+, wildlife, other reckless drivers. Riding a motorcycle on the street changed my mindset. I'm not a religious person but I did here the saying "don't ride faster than your Angels can fly". There is a lot to take in with that one.

My mom gave me this when I first started driving, and we’ve put one in every car we have owned since.

Unless you know family you probably won't get any info due to HIPPA laws.

We're you there rendering aid?
Could be family, or friend maybe. From that area, I would think they would have airlifted to possibly Loma Linda Medical Center...depending on trauma and severity.

I would start by calling that hospital, and give the name and date of accident. They will usually tell you if the patient is there, or was there. Probably nothing else though, but it's a start.

It was my husband that was driving.... Idk who the female is! Cuz he can't remember
Well your husband is obviously recovering and that is a good thing but the hospital staff might be able to get a little info if they know where she went, no name but they might tell you if she survived and is recovering well.

If he doesn't remember, and you don't know who is missing either, you'll be very hard pressed to get any info. This is not a good scenario from many points of view though. The hospital will try to protect privacy of the injured, as they should. Really, there are only so many people that would be in a car with me...family, coworkers and friends. Whatever your social circle may include. I think the above had an age listed, and that should narrow it down a bit.
