I watched every minute. The one with the boots and leather was worth watching - I swear the camera man was teasing me the whole time!! As a side bar, I’ve never seen so many rich stupid people all in one place in my entire life. Really, a Chevy blazer is now worth $170K????????

Yeah, prices are fragging crazy. On the other hand, the girls looked pretty good in person.

It's funny hearing some of remarks from other people there. One guy was going on to his date about how Ford in France made a Pantera model to compete with the Ferraris and related cars... Ford never made such a car. De Tomaso made a model called the Pantera and used a Ford engine to power it. They are cool cars and another cool fact is the band Pantera got their name from that car.

Lot 1422.1: 72 K5 sold for $440k. Late ‘60s custom Nova’s we’re going for insane money too. One was about $330k. Mind boggling what some people paid for most of these vehicles! It’s obvious I’m doing something wrong in life. Lol

The K5 that went for 440K was in my booth at SEMA. The thing is unreal in person. As close to perfect of a vehicle that I have ever seen. In my 20+ years of doing the show there has only been one vehicle that received more attention in the booth and that was Bigfoot 1. Even as perfect as it was 440K is insane money for a K5.

Ford, yes, France, no. The story is an interesting one and in truth, a collaboration. My old boss bought a new one in about 72'. Got to run around in it quite a few times, but never drove it. Always lusted after one, but just never panned out.

Back to the story ----- Here's an excerpt, and you can read the whole story here. http://www.danjedlicka.com/classic_cars/1971_74_detomaso_pantera.html

From the article ---

The Pantera was the result of a collaboration between Ford Motor and fiery, erratic, modestly successful sports car builder and former auto racer Alejandro DeTomaso. He had moved to Italy from Argentina with his wealthy American wife, Isabelle Haskell, who backed his business ventures.

DeTomaso convinced top Ford Motor executive Lee Iacocca to have Ford back and sell the Pantera in America, with DeTomaso handling distribution elsewhere. The Ford-powered Cobra sports car was gone, and Ford Motor wanted a sports car such as the Pantera to maintain its high-performance image in the early 1970s.

Such a car also would be a sexy addition to Ford Motor's staid Lincoln-Mercury division car line. And chairman Henry Ford II had wanted a sexy Italian auto to go with his new Italian wife since Ford Motor failed to buy the Ferrari auto company in 1963.

Exactly, was thinking who are these people and how did they make so much money in life if easily overpaying for some of these normal everyday easy to find vehicles, other vehicles well worth high prices for sure but stock or mildly modified or restored older benzs, vets, blazer or bronco, caddys just way over priced. On top of that the commissions that need to be paid put some of these way over the top. Just my opinion.

440 for a K5 I don’t care how perfect, lol they weren’t perfect when they were made.

Jay Leno: Tell me GM didn’t know they would catch on fire, they named it the Blazer. 😁

I saw this, the K5 go and then a rare Boss 429 go for almost $100k less!!!!!!! I was shocked! I did see that the quality of the K5 was top notch but it's not really "rare" compared to the Boss 429. I didn't see creds or quality of the Boss though. Crazy to see the shift in tides to what is popular not what has real value due to rarity. From what I could tell the Boss was a fair price but the K5 was astronomically high.

It just proves , rather consistently, that individual perception about value and worth is thrown out the window when 2 wealthy people want the same item....

Also, that humans are terrible at forcasting and valuing automobiles....collectibles have been wildly jumping all over in price for decades...the only sure thing is that their value constantly goes up...yet there is always talk about the "ceiling" just like real estate, it's continuing to climb, beyond anyone's dreams and expectations.

Even the best appraisers have to walk-back and eat crow constantly, as almost every year new records are broken from sales of the high end collectible hot rods and small build specialty vehicles/ex-race cars etc.

Truck prices were/are insane. Not rare at all, any of them. Makes me wonder down the road if the values will stay high. It has to end at some point.

To me the only truck worth spending a bunch on would be a very low millage nice high optioned Ford 7.3 4x4 pickup and they aren't.

One sold in the last few weeks on BAT for 47k.

Must be tough toodling round town knowing youre riding in a $1/2 M vehicle.... kinda puckers a guy up a bit ;)

That's how they get wrecked. People treat them like little princesses and get all nervous about laying the rubber down.

I have taught many an owner how to lead foot their car and lay rubber at will, it takes a relearn of your brain to ignore the price of failure.

Even after a few of them have stuck them in the ditch, side swiped a fence or another car, they all learned to laugh and enjoy their dream cars....almost everything can be fixed these days, you just need to whip out that wallet! 😆

I went to Barrett Jackson a couple times.
I liked seeing the #001 cars and the absolute top tier examples. I spent 2 days ogling the rows of perfect cars outside.
I was NOT impressed by the high rollers hemorrhaging cash for examples that immediately put even a doner vehicle out of reach for a Joe schmuck like me.
I used to buy decent Novas and Chevelles and even Falcons for less than $20K
Now forget it. They’ve priced even basic examples completely out of reach.

WTG, I asked myself on ever car ( can’t not watch ), if I had unlimited $, would I buy it. After day 3 it was 100% no. I just can’t act that stupid. Sidebar, buddy has 1 of the biggest vette dealers in the country ( also camaro/chevelle), goes to all the auctions personally, gets a bidder pass, but has never bought a car. I told him I look for him all the time. He said “ how stupid do you think I am? “. He rubs shoulders, buys beers, ends up buying cars that aren’t actually at the auction. He’s just making connections. Most the guys that sell cars have more at home, which many times is in the vicinity. I’ve gone, driven home, washed it, and watched him put $10,000 in his pocket next day, less my hotdog, coke, and gas to get back. Stupid isn’t contained to the auction floor, and theres definitely an ass for every seat. If you know what you’re buying, and know the market, it’s not that hard. The cash flo to get started is the hard part. He taught what a floor plan was when I was 17, just proving they don’t teach the important stuff in school! Not even in the 70’s

the auctions have some cool stuff i like seeing the rare models and old exotics but don't see the money some of these basic cars are getting. more power to the sellers rape the needy that's willing to pay.

Lot of Vettes were on display. Jeweler guy I've known back in 1978 had a 63 split window, classic silver with red interior. He was asking 15K, was big money then, now they're in the 200K range. At least it's more rare than some resto mod in the same range. There were some C2 Vettes in the 70-125 price , I'd rather buy and enjoy driving daily, than a K5 Blazer. Buddy of mine has a modded K5 for sale on consignment at $109.9K cdn. Sorry, but wouldn't even pay $50K.

Why have restomods become worth more than a good restoration?

august's consignment fee is 10%. I still have my Viper listed there and only one offer from the states, low balling me. Fuck that, I'll be listing the car in the spring myself. Don't know if you guys noticed, only two Gen I Viper roadsters were in the docket at BJ. No Gen II Coupes at all. People realized, no reserve can fuck them up as I've seen some Vipers were sold way low at BJ in the past. Modded cars seem to fetch more $$$ it seems.
My Viper GTS is listed at $74,950CDN at August now. I could sell it for that privately, saving the 10% for myself.

I think my buddy bought his K5 at BJ years ago, possibly had a few drinks too, haha

There were a ton of trucks and Blazers there at BJ. I hope they all go up because it makes my POS '79 worth stupid money too. 🤣

My favourite truck is the 40's dodge power wagons. There were quite few at BJ, most were modded. $$$$.
One I liked looked like restored original, era correct green paint with black wheels and some trim, went for 70K I think.
