Buddy was out skiing this morning and said.... "Saw something for first time today. A guy BASE jump off rock across from Echo. Total jump lasted about five seconds. He just about ate it but some how pulled it off and landed on road."

Hoping my friend at Echo webcam caught it.

Wow, that’s crazy. Would live to see that, if it was successful.

There was an incident 2 weeks ago where a guy was flown out of Havasu Palms from doing this too. Can’t remember the name of canyon wall that he jumped from tho. I never heard the outcome of his injuries.
Pretty crazy tho, wondering if it could be same guy or maybe someone in a group of them in the area that are doing it.

I would imagine as soon as you jump you’re pulling the shoot and hoping it opens before you hit the ground. [emoji15]

Reminds me of the time a guy jumped off the rock across from Buckskin...

They found him a week later at the lower dam. Ugh.

For my Plan B, I'd be sure I cleared the road and was in the water.

Idiot Rock is an outcropping that juts into the River, just up from Sundance. And we lose 1-2 every year from jumping off that, even being only about a 20' jump. It's circled below.

I've only seen one person jump from the taller cliff, pictured above. Back before the '84 flood, the River right below it was fairly shallow. In 1980, some guy decided he was going to jump from it. He cleared the road, but landed in 2 feet of water. He didn't survive. (obviously)

Typically they are hand released vs a pull cord. Have a buddy who does a lot of climbing, and recently got into base jumping. Guess it’s more fun and a lot faster than the climb back down.

You have to build a little airspeed for the pilot chute to work. You want it to grab air, not just fall with you.
I don’t know the math, but I would think a minimum of 2 seconds?

I honestly have no clue how BASE jumping works nor would I ever want to try it. [emoji15].

Showing my age here. Sadly I was in Parker that weekend when that guy tried to jump off that cliff. I heard he was wasted on LSD when he tried it? RIP

I remember when that guy jumped and landed in the shallow water. The story I heard at the time was his girlfriend had been killed in a car crash that morning or the day before. He and his friend were up there, why I have no idea, and he just took off and jumped.

When we were kids we would regularly jump off the 'circled' rock as well as the cliffs down by the damn on the Ca side, never thought 'bout getting hurt. Young and stupid.

We'd also swing from the train bridge into the river, had a chain we put there to attach the ski rope to. Might still be there? Once the train passed on the bridge while we were in a little cage area under the track, very eerie as the bridge would creak and make noises while the trail slowly went by.

And I'm 99.9% sure the flood was in '83.

You are correct that the flood was 1983. However, the River remained flooded and restricted through most of 1984. It was devastating for us, as we broke away from Yuma County and became La Paz County on 1 January 1983. And with River tourism generating the majority of revenue for the County, we started out our infancy way deep in a hole.

Yuma County stopped me and said if he sees me again doing that my mom and dad would have to come down to yuma to get me out ,,,,,,, i was 11 at the time , luckily he was good friends with both Jims that owned the jolly knight park my grand parents lived at ,,,,, well kind of a good thing ,,,, he told them they told my dad and he gave me the belt ,,,,, lesson learned

Early 90’s I saw a guy attempt to paraglide in copper canyon on memorial weekend. I could see where he was going with the idea, he climbed up on the north side incline to the top, spread his chute out and then took off running down the ridge towards the water where all the boats were. His chute filled with air and he took flight for about 15’, then his chute sort of went out in front of him and drug him the rest of the way down to the water over the rocks😂 It was an epic failure in front of a crowd of thousands. Some road rash and bruised ego, but way more memorable than if he had actually taken flight and soared around above copper canyon for hours LOL

If your reading this Mr. early 90’s copper canyon para glide guy, just know I enjoyed your attempt immensely.👍

I'm going to respectfully disagree about "most of 1984". I know for a fact we were boating that Summer, in fact being the romantic kinda guy that I am I asked my wife to marry me as we were swimming from the dock at Sundance to the boat that was tied to a buoy just up river, where they still are today. That was in June '84 and surprisingly, she said yes.

I've never been into jumping off high rocks into the water. It hurts! And it's freakin' dangerous. Think I jumped off of the second ledge at Copper Canyon one time and that was enough for me. LOL. It did however see someone (I actually have it on video) jump from the very very top of Copper Canyon in the late 90's. Crazy. Dude lived. But damn. Crazy.

Early 80's everyone jumped off those rocks naked and drunk. Wonder how we all stayed alive.

we were at the river this particular weekend but not Copper canyon when we heard a guy jumped off the cliff there and hit the deck of a boat, broke his neck. And if I’m not mistaken the same weekend a fight broke out in the canyon, one guy swung a paddle and hit the other guy in the head and killed him. If it wasn’t the same weekend it was pretty close to it.

I didn’t like the canyon back then, made me uneasy with all those boats packed in there. You remember the guy and his wife that had a little dive boat and they’d dive there after weekends? he told me they’d find all kinds of stuff, wallets, Rayban’s (I lost my share of those on the strip) rings and so on.

I spent close to 4 yrs throwing myself off various things across the Western United States in my late 20s. Not sure how high that cliff in question is but if its ~220ish' its doable with a 46" pilot chute. Much lower and you would need to static line it.

Yes, it was Mike Macs BIL I believe. I was on the water when we saw him fly by. My buddy was at Echo when he crashed and they did all they could as he bleed out.

Yeah. Buddy tried to help him as well. Same Buddy supposedly got the video with his drone of the base jumper from what Samantha replied when I asked. She is right across from it.

Had our prom on the queen mary back in 74. There was a guy from another school, there were several proms going on at the same time, and his friends bet him to jump off the ship. He did and they found him the next morning stuck in the mud up to his arm pits. It was either that year or the next when my girl friend had hers there?
I think of that guy and his family every time I go on that shit hole, rusting hulk of a tourist trap to watch the ski race.

I was one of 4 to get to the kite 1st, his name was Jeffrey Bline. It wasn't the same as the para glide pic above. I was on the beach as he came by with a buddy flying as well having fun yelling & waving to the girls, then he banked hard right and I knew he was to low for that type of maneuver. Grabbed by buddy and jumped in the golf cart. We pulled the kite off of him. He cleared the mobiles, but didn't have room to clime, came up into the eave of the building right before the store. Leg torn off, hole in his head, he looked at all of us, we talked to him, not much anyone could do. Then the ASSHOLE of the century, bald headed dick named Jeff who ran the park into the ground for years shows up and screams why do these guys fly so fucking low, look what he did to my building. Then leaves. This is the moron who did the launch ramp redo by hiring people who don't build launch ramps, another story. I looked up his name a few weeks later, I wanted to know who he was. He was having a good time right up to the end. Wasn't the 1st or last death I came across at the river. Unforgiving place at times.

He almost landed on my buddies cart. It barely put a scratch on the clubhouse. Sad deal i remember that day well.

Jeff was not the one running the ramp build it was Denny. I talked to him each day and he was proud of his guys doing the work. They were all park workers except 1. The black guy from big bend 2 from our park and another from Emerald. I would prefer to have Jeff back as manager instead of the 15 others that tried to replace him. New guy Tom is solid and is doing a great job without Saul showing him the ropes of how are park operates he would be having a hard time. Jeff knew a lot about our park and big bend. Heard his mobile sold for over $400k at windmill and have not seen him since. He was always cool with me. Even when I broke a water main at 11 at might and had to beat on his door to wake him up. Another time our power went out and WFS Adam called him from my place at 3 am. He showed up in 20 minutes and changed the fuse for us after joking around telling us to put on a life west get a chair and go in the river and go back to sleep.

That makes sense about the launch ramp, they didn't understand the angle needed. I always had a 4 wheel drive so no issues. They ruined our beach spot when they dredged all of the sand. Oh well. Jeff never seemed to like any of us who owned mobiles near the ramp back then. They went through a lot of people running that place. Not a easy job. My last memory of him is when he walked up and told us to leave because we were 2 weeks late on rent. My sister, her husband & I were partners at time, their 5 year old son died a month before. Stupid part is we were in contact with management about when we would catch up. That was about 15 years ago. Way more good times at the river than bad. Most of my best memories were hanging out at the river. Always expected to be back someday, still thinking we will.
