There was Pop's " Cheep Jeep " You can't see it from this angle but on the back there is a "platform" we would stand on while hanging onto the custom roll bar. Two seat belts on the bench seat. Nobody ever got hurt
Back in the late 60's, a company called "EMPI" developed the first VW dune buggy, invented by the owner, Joe Vitone, who also was the first VW dealer in the US (in Riverside, CA). Joe also was a former world record holder for speed on a motorcycle.
This image looks like the old EMPI dune buggy. Joe would loan his buggies to my dad, and we would go hill climbing out by Canyon Crest in Riverside.
The orginal buggies were boxie, sheet metal versions, with the VW frame shortened by one foot and widened by one foot, with posi-tracktion provided by manual parking brakes for each wheel.
Later, they turned to fiberglass and made them lighter and more rounded.
