After 2 postponements of our 3 week Hawaii trip, we are trying to salvage this summer for the kids. With the state going backwards, i am still unsure on how enjoyable a trip anywhere would be, but we have a week booked in Big Bear. Other than boating on the lake, skipping rocks, hiking... Any hidden things to do suggested? Not sure what will be open in a few weeks, so Zip Lining, Jeep excursions may not even be an option, so I am preparing for the worse. I was even considering renting an SUV for exploring the mountain where my car cant go, like crab flats and such. I am not sure if I want the kids to see dad Polish a few bottles of Captain while sitting on the porch and playing Uno for the 1000th time... Any insight is appreciated.

You pretty much nailed all there is to do up there. Lol.
My family has had a cabin up there for 50+ years.

tell me about it... wife and kids think there is much to do up there...I think they are in for a surprise, but I am not about to burst their bubble... I am hoping to do a search and hunt out some waterfalls that are somewhat accessible, perhaps a small stream with a 2' drop off that I will call a waterfall...LOL. I think I am going to take 2 handles of Captain for those Uno games...

I'm sure things are closed..... Duffy rentals in the harbor are limited in time and people so I would think Big Bear boat rental is about the same...

Your moving in the same state, not much is going to change.....

Take a drive to Yellowstone.... Can be there in 2 days... then head to Rushmore...

If you plan to go offroading, there are areas behind Arrowhead that are closed down. There has been a ton of traffic up here, so take your time and be patient. Also there is a signal on 330. The red light isn't a suggestion, if you disobey it you absolutely will have a head on collision.

Cancel that and just rent a Motorhome and a rzr to tow behind it and go exploring somewhere. Yellowstone, Idaho, Montana. There is plenty of adventure out there you just need to go find it.

at $250+ per day and only daily 100 miles and 4 hrs of Generator time that idea is out the window... Really looked into the RV deal, but we'd be so upside down with the costs.... Trying to keep local in case things get crazier in the next few weeks, so we are not just dumping $ to have to drive back home if things shut down further..

I'm not sure about any waterfalls. There is some strong running water on the north side, down into the desert on Hot Creek. even some hot springs etc, but that is pretty far away and a big hike. There are some great short hikes, and definitely good off-road trails etc. right out of Big Bear that you can take with any 4WD SUV, in fact most of the roads are 2WD friendly. Fishing on the lake can be good, and there is running water below the dam but steep. There may be a waterfall or two below there, but again these are steep canyons. There is decent golf, https://www.bigbearmountainresort.com/summer/golf/golf-course/info and it appears the lifts are still open for mountain biking as well.

There is a small zoo there, go fishing, kayaking and hiking. Go on the Alpine slide. Go over to Arrowhead and check out the village, go carts right next to the lake. Hike to "Heart rock". Check out Lake Gregory, probably closed, big inflatables on the lake to swim to and dive off. Go bowling in Crestline.
Sorry if some stuff closed, some might not be and just trying to help...

Wife and I have a place and pontoon in Big Bear, Sorry, but it’s where we go to do nothing.
Quiet cocktails on the porch listening to the wind in the trees, then a nap. Throw anchor in boulder bay and sun and cocktails, then a nap on the boat. Water is cold, but swimable if your open to it. Otherwise, Fishing, Hiking, Off-roading, golf, there is a little zoo my young kids got a kick out of.

Got a portable GPS? Mix in some Geocaching to kill a few hours or more. Cruise over the base of John Bull trail and watch guys who don’t know what they’re doing flounder over the rocks.

My wife and I are also trying to figure out things to do. We were hoping that once my heel issue is behind us about taking a trip up to Santa Cruz and explore the city and its surroundings.

Great idea... I don't have a GPS, but that is a good reason to grab one.. They will help move some time!

Too funny about John Bull. That's the site six of Big Bear. lol I did it for the first time a few weeks ago. Total shit show! Our group waited over an hour just to get to the gate keeper. The little TJ did good!
All the off road stuff is open. You can drive Holcomb valley in pretty much anything.

I’ve run that trail 50 times...had a stock-ish looking 86 Toyota pickup with 31” tires, trutracs, 4.7:1 t-case gears...and 2” lift springs in the back...independent front. If I got on the throttle and brake it would snug the diffs up and go over whatever that trail had. All the Jeep guys would laugh at me until I drove around them off line while they were hung up on something.

Head down 38 to Seven oaks, and drive down the 1n09 forestry trail to Santa Ana creek, and bear creek. Beautiful little creeks that hold brookies and rainbows.

I was there a couple of weeks ago, Seven Oaks has a little bar/restaurant that has the greatest food. I had a Turkey Pastrami sandwich that was out of this world. But the creek was totally packed.

You should be able to make it all the way to bear creek on 1n09 in a car. I haven’t been in a long time, but it’s fairly flat as I remember. It might be washed out and rutted in places.

Holcomb Valley for sure.

Mt Biking. They will take up on the lifts at Snow Summit, and you can ride back down.

Might be a bit tough for your young kids to ride down the Snow Summit trails, so just take the trails across the top of the mountain, and come down the easy ways.

If you guys are looking at summer to go with your family in the mountains and they give you a couple of suggestions. Without hurting anyone’s feelings big bear is not one of them.

Park city Utah fabulous, Heber Utah is close by, horseback riding and side-by-side Reynolds to the 8000 foot level it’s fabulous great food historic downtown with, I believe Utah and the big park is still open it’s a lot of fun

Heber Utah is close by horseback riding and side-by-side Rentals to the 8000 foot level it’s fabulous great food historic downtown with even Whiskey tasting room.

Lake Tahoe big place but everything‘s open you have casinos if you want to hit him in the horse back staples are still open plus boating

I will be in Tahoe the 15th of next month
