We heard an odd boom last night about 1:30 am. Woke us up. I checked the house for anything that may have fallen off the wall. Looked out front in case someone crashed into a parked car. It wouldn't be the first time someone hit something of ours. I looked out back too but didn't see anything.
A bit later we heard some large trucks. We figured at that point it was probably an accident, and we were hearing the tow truck coming to pick up the car.
That guess was pretty close.
Turns out the crash was almost literally in our back yard.
From my back yard, which is on the end of a sort of a ridge, a road runs by below us. Some guy in this minivan lost control, ran through the front yard of the house to the right, and flew up onto the garage of the house on the left. We had fire trucks, ambulances, LEO units, etc all parked down below for a few hours. Street blocked off, while this jumbo wrecker plucked the minivan off the garage roof. It was pretty exciting stuff.
Apparently the driver made a getaway on foot. I'm thinking either drunk, or a stolen car and the old screwdriver to the steering column resulted in the steering locking up and the subsequent loss of control sent him flying.
This morning's aftermath:
I'd say it is a testament to how well the house is built. A flying van onto the roof and the garage looks pretty solid!
