i need help on props. so many choices making my head spin. i have 240 hallett open bow with the old 454 merc mag mpi. 385hp. boat came with 28p way too tall scrapped those for a set of 26p 4600rpm @59mph not too bad but id like to be as close to 5000rpm as i can. borrowed a set of 24p labbed props this weekend out in parker hit 5100rpm boucing off the limiter @54mph. those sets are both 3x3. now the confusion is to go 3x4 or 4x4? will going to a 4x4 24p get me down to 4900rpm or what is my next step? i dont need to run wide open all the time most of my cruising is 25-30mph with the whole family with occasional burst to 50mph to get around a roll bar boat so i dont launch the wife out of the bow on a 6ft wake.

A 24 pitch set is most common on boats of that size and weight.

The 4x3 sets are what is common now, they perform well but I would honestly run the first set of 24s I came across. If you're running a set of 3x3s, index them.

What do you mean by index them? Time them?

These guys have a try before you buy program this may help you find something you like before you dump a ton of money on a set you don't really like.

You may want to try a 4x4 26* if you we bouncing off the limiter @ 54mph. You're really close to what you want. 26* should pull your rpms down just enough.

i currently own 26p 3 blades, they work but put me in the lower range of the max rpm on that motor. im thinking maybe going to the 4 blade front and 3 blade aft 24p will get me 4900/5000rpm?

Now I’ve heard mixed reviews on this. Some say it doesn’t matter, the merc way and then I’ve heard you want 2 blades under the cave plate to counter act a pressure wave off the cave plate. So who the hell knows lol

I can not provide positive input on the actual prop orientation in respect to the drive.

I can say on a hill signature you line up the word signature on both props. If you don't it may lock up and stall your boat. I had this happen to me once. I was off one tooth. It was no harm no foul that time. After I corrected it I never had issues.

I had some good luck with adding slight cupping to both. Much better hole shot but I did loose about 5 mph on the top which is extreme I felt.

I attribute that loss in speed to a loss in stern lift. I have 28P 3x3's. 454 MPI in an Essex Sterling which is a heavy boat for a 21'.

Also consider the upper drive ratios. So I'm at 58 mph at 4600 rpm with above prop set. Hard to nail down what I would need to do to go faster and keep hole shot for skiing.

I don't know what my upper ratio is and the boat is in parker or I'd check.
