I know open headers attract unwanted attention. So be it/bring it on.
LEO- "Have you been drinking"
Me- Not yet.

Baffled and sober.

Why did they pull you over in the first place?

Do you have to show it at local lakes before you launch?

Lake perris website says yes unless over 45 until next year but the California boater safety says all boaters as of January 1st of this year. I wouldn’t want to make the drive with family only to find out the information on the webpage is incorrect.

Mission bay told us they won’t let you launch without out it but friend had one so no issue and it was the 1st time we’d ever been approached when launching.

I was checked one time 4th of July weekend launching at mission bay. Otherwise I’ve never had to show mine.

Just tell them it’s a rental boat.
Works until they ask for proof of registration.

Since we did have the time we asked all the questions about getting around it. Doesn’t sound like they are going to let anyone slide at least according to the officer we spoke to. Believe me when I tell you I’m the last person that wanted to take this stupid test/class! But I didn’t want to risk wasting another day (counting the day I took the test) and end up at a lake only to have to turn around and go home with family in the car and ruin a day of boating not having it.

So does any know if they are going to enforce it in Needles and Havasu? I am wondering if my excuse, I only boat on the Nevada and Arizona side of the river will work.

Wont work if you get pulled over by a CA LEO. Most of them think they can pull you over well east of the “state line” so if you don’t have it and claim you’re out of their jurisdiction they will enjoy giving you a safety inspection and probably a cavity search for good measure.

My insurance required is so I'm an official state certified boat operator....jokes on them cuz I had my eleven y/o son do most of it while at the office for summer break. He did really well and learned a few things to boot👍

Just another feel good cash grab by the state that mandates you pay for a plastic bag👎

And for those of you saying you already lost the card or lost your wallet. Take a picture of it on your phone most of us know where our phones are at all times.

We have problems with operators in the Harbors and over at the island with who the stand on vessel is.

So if anyone taking the course can clearly understand that the rest is just fluff.

And a Blow Bote with the engine running and no sails up is not a sail boat.

Very surprised this bullshit hasn’t been thrown out…required by owners but not renters. Ya I understand all the blaw blaw blaw but from a legal standpoint and insurance companies…sooner or later this will get litigated.

As well it should. I’m all for education and shit but not requiring rental folks to at least sit there and watch a 30 min video on the do’s and dont’s is insane.

I don't think you need a drivers license to drive a boat in Arizona. So I wonder, if I get my ID in Arizona (even though my Boats are registered in California) if that would work. lol Can you tell that I am tired a Californias BS.

You do not need a "boaters license" in California.

When the state (of Calif) DOES NOT REQUIRE ONE FOR A RENTAL WATERCRAFT.

Anything else isn't enforceable.

The sheep are going to fall in line, as always.

It's a scam and a money grab.

Arizona is trying to push the same bullshit. The sheep are lining up for the slaughter here too.

I still don’t understand the money grab as the test can be taken for free and the results get submitted to the state of California? For tickets maybe but it’s not like they just started requiring it for everyone over night they slow rolled it out over 10 years? Also it’s a one time test that you don’t ever have to renew so if my kids take it today they’re done and don’t ever have to do it again.

Again I think it’s bs and I wasted half of one of my weekend days doing it.

The state gets $10.00 per applicant.

Yep. Hardly a money grab however if there was zero take away from the course then I understand the comment.

If one is down to their last $10 spot I would stay home because....B.O.A.T.

What? WTF are you talking about? So are you saying that $10.00 a person won't add up?

Whatever. A $1000 vehicle registration is a MONEY grab.

I happen to think there is a need for the education and if the 10 bucks is needed to get some basic boating installed then I have ZERO problem with it.

Took the course, actually learned a few things. I definitely learned you can't have any lights on other than navigational lights while underway. The Underwater lights and the colored stern lights get you pulled over in Thompson bay.

It worries me more when a guy I know that has been boating for a long time, told me he has taken the course test multiple times and keeps failing it....lol...he literally asked me if he could pay me to take it for him...

Ok so if Dave charged a one time $10 fee to come on this site would you stop coming and say it’s just a money grab?

California has way better ideas for money grabs than this! I’d be surprised if the guy that came up with the one time $10 fee didn’t get fired for such a a cheap shitty idea of a money grab.

Hey it's only .69/gallon so no worries there hell it's only. 10/bag. Or 10.3% of my income, and it's just $800/yr ea for the opportunity to have a corp or LLC, just a measly 7.25% on anything I buy including private party sales plus an additional 1.25% on my alcohol purchase. Add the additional $10 mattress disposal fee and $50 electronics recycling fee not to mention fire prevention fee or lead acid battery fees and by the time you add in the 911 surcharge fee and the natural gas fee plus the ballast Water fee you can quickly see how much the bargain it really is.

You're delusional if you don't think $10 per head generates State a windfall of income not to mention it opens it up for further regulation just as soon as everybody is status quo with "its only $10"

I got pulled over on my stand up jet ski by San Bernadino County Sheriff Dept. LEO said they pulled me over for having an Expired CA tag. I pointed to my AZ reg #s and my current AZ reg sticker and said "what?!"

No apology or anything but then the LEO asked me if I had been drinking. I replied "No, these are difficult enough to ride sober". He didn't seem to get my sense of humor but let me go. I was surprised they never asked for my boaters safety card. LOL
