Two weeks to stop the spread. hmm ,heard that before.

I dunno, common sense would lead me to believe, the US Forest Service will base their decisions to re-open or remain closed, on weather conditions and available resources for managing any new fire starts.
Decreasing the number of people in the forests might mitigate any new starts caused by people and or their vehicles, plus in the event one starts by lightning or magical spontaneous combustion, there will be far fewer people to locate and escort to safety.

But no, you're probably right, it's just about them trampling on your rights to have a great time, government control and make you subservient by forcing you to stay home.
I read on a tweet, that if you sign a contract that you'll wear a mask while hiking, they'll allow you to enter. 👍 👍 👍 Sorry, can't post a copy of the tweet, it's been scrubbed as being offensive to squirrels. ;)

We live in the Cleveland NF, over the last 20 years they have routinely closed public access areas during extreme fire danger so this makes sense. I wish they would close it more often. The local rangers close the dirt road gates any time they get more than 1/4" of rain.

common sense?
Ya that’s a good one with a government agency .
Now they know , they can get away with IT
They just go with it.

Close it down!
Pathetic .

So closing it will prevent a fire? Sounds like our California gun laws.

I don't know if closing the forests during these conditions will prevent a fire, but removing the "YOU" from Only You Can truly Prevent Forest Fires, I believe can certainly help the odds.
Obviously lightning isn't human caused, but the list is almost endless as to how human ignorance or negligence or intentions, result in fire starts.

As a child driving with my parents up to our vacation home at Lake Arrowhead, I recall the huge Smokey The Bear "Only You" signs along the highway. But, I never really knew the story behind ole Smokey.
Recently I found this article and since Dave's posted a couple of " I didn't know that" historical articles, this thread seems like a good as any place to toss in this one.

Interesting point of view.
It seems your rational is.
If you can't stop all possible human causes for wildfire starts, then don't attempt to stop any if those mitigation attempts might cause any conceivable inconvenience.
Does this thinking apply to everything, or only fire prevention ?

It sounds like our gun laws, it's only going to hurt the people that enjoy it.

We're not talking about gun laws, we're talking about people performing negligent, ignorant or even intentional acts, causing wild fires.
Contrary to your opinion and that of a few other members, I find it prudent that given certain criteria and or conditions, that eliminating public access is warranted.
You apparently do not. Cool ✌

Unlike LOF and a few other members, I don't see any value, nor do I derive any pleasure from arguing differing opinions on an internet forum.
Fine, have a great day regardless 😁

Just returned from the Eastern Sierras today, strange seeing all the camp sites empty at Rock Creek. Not one boat was on lake Crawley this morning. Fishing was only good in the backcountry. Most lakes are low along with the streams. One of the tackle shops told me they will loose thousands this weekend alone. This is a picture of South Lake.
My Dad was supposed to be up there until today, he was at the Mammoth RV park and they told him Tues he had to leave Wed they were only going to allow people to camp coming from the Up North fires. He was out on Lake Mary on Tues had a boat reserved for the day they told him had to be off by I think 1 that they were locking the gates. Also had a T Time on Wed but nobody answered the phones so who knows on that one.

They might need to lick out the power companies they seem to start more fires than a few people camping.

Checked into san Jacinto SP Idyllwild cg. No campfires allowed, makes sense. Sure as shit, as soon a the sun started to set, some fuckaluck lights a campfire. Glad someone got the ranger. They go out of their way to inform you at check in...No Campfires...the even write it on the back of the tag you hang in the window.

Looks like the closures continue in some areas. We had res at Heart Bar group camp near Onyx Summit. Got an email yesterday that it will remain closed until the 23rd. Our group decided to go to koa in vail lake area near temecula. Would have preferred the elavation.

Inyo Forest opened back up today. We have a side x side trip to Mammoth in a couple weeks, so I’m glad to hear it.
