Been around boats a long time, but never built one let alone two. Lots to learn.. hope you all don't mind lots of questions....

Son's boat is a 74 Campbell 20ft, dc, with BBC, slushbox and casale v-drive.
Mine is 77 Campbell 24ft, Cuddy Cabin, BBC, T-400, casale v-drive.

Jr's will go first, lots of work done.

Well pops and I are putting this 20 footer back together to see if it floats and runs. This winter we plan to take it apart and rebulid the coolest boat we have ever owned. The Malibu Sunsetter LXI was a bitchin boat but just doesnt have the cool factor/ relax life life style like the Campbells do!!!

Rickybobby,

Your Campbell 24 belonged to my dad in the late 1980's to the late 1990's.

Good luck with your Campbell projects.

I picked up a new project the other day and now need to move the 24ft out. Let me know if anyone is interested. She'll go to the parts bin soon if not.

Lake Havasu and Castaic.... She had a name but PO painted over it. May sand it off to see what it was, we think there is pacalon under the white paint as well. She needs some TLC but runs strong.... Lots planned for the winter, if it ever shows up.... :headscratch:

Having absolutely no clue what we are doing, but getting lots of help from awesome old school Campbell guys (like 20spectra's pop and this guy)
Pete Giroux at www.girouxboats.com

His latest new/old Cole Runner bottom. I think it gets painted this week ???

Not sure how he gets anything done, as he always makes time for my dumbass questions !!!
thanks guys

Hey RB, looking at the engine pics, i was surprised not to see risers on the exhaust, how low is the motor compared to the water line? I was wanting to run the 35* elbows on the Spectra was was affraid of getting water backing up thru the exhaust. Cool looking boats, i looked at a couple of campbells up in the Ventura area before buying the Spectra, something to be said about owning the original, everyone copied Campbel.

Your exhaust question is interesting as it has never been an issue on my rollbar boat, but with these ol skool boats, kinda of makes you go uh ???

So I used a life line and contacted one of my Campbell sources (his boat is set up just like mine, only way nicer). This was his response.

Water can get sucked into the motor if one of the following happens:
1) An engine with a huge or weird cam profile can cause water to be drawn back into the exhaust system, which is called "reversion".

2)The engine backfires and produces suction in the exhaust line rather than positive pressure, and therefore sucks water in.

3)The engine "runs on" after the ignition is shut off, or because of a variety of reasons momentarily runs backwards. These conditions will cause water to be drawn in through the exhaust.

4)When the boat is stopped quickly, the engine goes to low exhaust pressure, and the big back wave which hits the transom can overcome the exhaust pressure and travel back into the engine. This is not reversion, but it has the same effect of allowing water to get where it's not supposed to be.

5)Anytime the engine is not running, there is no exhaust to keep water out. While sitting beached, waves can slam into the transom and go right up the exhaust into the engine. Not reversion, but ugly.

6)When the boat is being towed, the engine is off, and the flaps are held open by the boat's forward motion, and water tends to swirl around the hull and into the open exhaust, and then into the engine. Not reversion, but ugly.

7)Flaps obviously help tremendously in each of the above situations, and I consider them "must" items.

My boat does have flappers, but the engine also sits up above or high enough above the water line that it is or at least has not been an issue for me or my buddies boat
thanks
rb

The heighth of the engine was key, I don't liek the look of the "Snails" but the exhaust is below the water line so makes it mandatory on mine. Thaks for the follow up.

Thanks RD
Here is my latest project....

I put this together so that I can pre wire as much as I can while the hull is in Havasu. Trying to take my time and make all the connections as solid and clean as possible. Doing something right cuz the gauges all light up :eek and all have power to them...... How did that happen????:p

The idea is that when I get the hull back I can just plug and play ?????

This is what I drug home from Havasu...... Dont think its the same boat !!!!:champagne:

So much to do, not sure where to start. Have more work to do on the trailer, just trying to get something done, everyday.... The tanks went back in on Sunday and working on replacing all the rubber lines now, in addition to polishing the rub rail (not a fun job!!!).

Right now just mild bbc, dressed up a bit. Later, after mama calms down a little, I would like to see if a period correct (looking) dual turbo would fit into the motor box I built. I thought it might be fun to see if the vintage look could be replicated with all new stuff ????

Whats the story on Brown Sugar ???? We need pics and detail.....

The brown boat "Foolish Pleasure" was my first 24..... a little more work that what I was looking for. I sold it to a guy in Az and he is in the process of reworking it. The motor had some interesting parts from what he told me. I bought my second 24 "no name" and promptly tore her all apart and now I am putting her back together. She was blue and now red.

Answered my own question. The poster is not Colin. I asked because my buddy Colin has a Spectra 24 named Brown Sugar. Might be a brother in the family that owns / owned the Brown Sugar Campbell.

Carry on.

Brown sugar i bought some years back complete in decent shape with no name but thats its original name so be it.I have already redone alot of the interior wood and upgraded dash and many other items with teak wood.Iam now in the process of taking all of the mechanical out and getting the boat set up for a blown bb chevy,400trans and moving the v drive in the near future.

Your boat is beyond sugary sweet !!!!! I need more pics of your bow light with the little extension thingy. I need to build/buy something similar to work on mine as I now have a bow pad. Didnt have one before. I would also like to see what direction you went with the dash and wood interior. I am getting close to putting my back together and I keep making changes to it!!!!! Right now I think I have to many gauges and I might lose one or two, I like clean and classy vs cluttered?????
Have you contacted anyone on the Campbell Owners website ???? They would love to see your boat and include you in on any future events????

Your remotor project sounds outstanding and should push that thing down the lake very nicely..... If you have any pics of that start a build thread here and lets see em !!!!!!!!

Have you seen the photos of Moviemoney's motor, very very nice.....
