Anyone have any advice on what size gears to run in a 12 degree casale. The boat its going in is a 1970 hondo flatbottom with a 496 BBC making around 700hp. the gears in it right now are 1.15 gears but they are eaten up with rust and I was wondering if i should switch out gears to a higher gear ratio. I am wanting to try and get a pretty high top speed and am not worried as much about how fast it gets up and goes.

Prop size and max engine rpm will tell you where to go.

I ran 12's in my '70 Hondo with a 427 and spun it to about 7200. With the shitty old prop that got me knocking on 90's door.

We'll really need more info

The prop is a 13 inch 3 blade, not sure what pitch because there arent any markings on it. It is also rusted and chewed up. Are 2 blade props better for speed?

I would buy a 2 blade prop and keep your 15s or buy better condition 15s. Contact jj beaver for gears. If your gears and prop are rusted and chewed up. I would check your prop shaft and all running gear. Do you have a whirlaway? If you don’t, I would look into one sooner than later

I agree with everything that Taco said. 15's may let it rev too fast, if so, step it up to 18's or 22's.

I ran a little over 100 in a Cole TR2 at 7200 with 15's, about the same hp, got there fast as well. Had a 2 blade prop, but I don't remember the size. Sure wish I still had it.

I plan on getting one of jj's prop shaft release kits since they run significantly cheaper than a whirlaway. Do ya'll know how much a set of gears from jj would run me?

JJ's shaft release is also a little beefier in the dogs. Great product!

Does anyone know where I can find some reasonably priced gears (preferably used). jj won't take mine because they arent in good condition and he doesnt sell them he only exchanges them. I also need to find a two blade prop preferably used, but i havent had any luck on facebook.

Call Dave Connelly in Havasu. I know he has about 3 used sets for 12 degree.
I don't know the gear ratios though.

With 700 hp, you'll want 18s or 22s. A set of 15's will cavitate the prop when even thinking about the gas pedal until about 40mph.

A good 2 blade prop is what you want.

I had the same set up as the cole, 82 TR 2,Ran 109 mph river class. Prop was 11.5 15 2-blade. I had a Stevens 1970 Flatbottom LS7 with 12 degree box and strut, When i tried to run 2 Blade prop, The boat wanted to rattle apart with no real speed gain, 12 degree strut angle do not like 2 blades...
