I recently Purchased a Casale V-Drive unit on ebay and was supprised on several fronts:
1) Price - $500 for complete unit with Whirlaway and locking handle.
2) Advertised as 12deg but case is part number 61000-1/61000-2 which is 10deg.
3) Whirlaway is in prefect condition including dogs.
4) Gears are 12 DEG 1.22 (How's that possible in a 10deg case?)
5) Input shaft is 1-3/8 which should further define the case as 10deg.

Is this just a matter of someone just putting 12deg gears in a 10deg case? Is that even possible?

your thoughts ......

They still may be 12 deg cases.

I would call:

Tom Bentley of Menkens V Drives 530-347-4800 http://www.menkensvdrives.com

or JJ at Beaver Fab 254 854-2083 [email protected]

Either one of these two gentleman will answer your questions.

BeaverFab is here occasionally, but Tom is not.

@Toolman is the guy making cases for casale

D21 is an idiot, and only makes trinkets anyway.

...or contact Casale. :)

Yea, should have listed them in the contact list. :)

I know there have been cases stamped as 12* but are actually 10*. Just contact Casale directly. They are super cool dudes.

Are you serious or joking? I have considered some of his stuff...............

I had a horrible experience with One of those Prop shaft seals. It literally caught on fire, then put itself out when the water came rushing in. Those piles of garbage are dangerous.

It was on my boat. Made it from the Keys to Pirates. Thankfully I called my neighbor to grab my truck and trailer and save me before it sunk. The grease heated up. Spit out all over my seats. It hit my wife in the arm. She pointed down and it was literally on fire. So I stopped and the seals were burnt by then. Water started rushing in. [emoji106]. Good times.

My issue with d21 is when Mouser was selling off Steveos Vdrive cases, that I manufacture, and d21 tried some gotcha saying the cases were no good and that they didn't fit and people needed to buy whichever cases d21 was selling because those are good.

I have made probably 50 sets of 10 deg cases over the years for Steveo, water jacket and no water jacket, probably 10 sets of 8 deg cases and two trick sets of 8 deg cases with the bottom cut down to fit a drag boat with a very narrow strut angle for Don Baushers(sp?) boat that got him back into racing after he broke the last of the one-off cast cases he had from casale.

NONE of those cases that I ever made ever had an issue. Otherwise, I would have heard about it from Steveo

Apparently there was a possible back story that ONE person, possibly fiction, possibly in Nevada, had a set that didn't fit, everyone heard the story, but no one knew "who" it was.

I spent hours on the phone asking every vdrive guy I knew to try and track down the possible owner to find out what was wrong, or what happened with the cases, and I never found a soul.

I was just looking for something other than the rope seal because I leave it in the water overnight and I worry about it dripping . Lee says the ones you plumb water to are the best. Mines an 1 1/8 shaft, maybe the clearances were too tight? Idk. But I went back to a billet rope seal that Tom Peterson makes. It looks really nice too.

When I talked to Dave Connoly he wasn’t a fan of the D21 seal either.

I just got back to the computer. Thanks for your responses. I was hoping to discuss this issue here rather than tie up someone at work since I'm not buying anything. Just doesn't seem fair to ask for their time. The case actually has the part number cast into it so I suppose that rules out someone with number punches. The center plate was punched with 1.37 which I assumed meant it originally had 37% gears in it (I could be wrong). I have attached a few pictures for reference

Then just Level the top face put a protractor on the angled face and see what it says.

At this point you may be concerned what is inside and if the gears are set up right. Just something to think about. It could mean your life.

I like the protractor idea. I'll see if I can find and dust mine off for tomorrow morning since the case is in my shop several miles from my house.

I just can't see how the case can be anything but 10deg since The casale parts catalog clearly shows:
61000B 10Deg
62500B 12Deg
The case in my Cole hydro is 61000b if I'm not mistaken but the Ebay case is is 61000-1 on one half and 61000-2 on the other. I'm going to double check the Cole case here in a minute. No mater what the protractor Idea should solve the mystery tomorrow .
Thanks,
Steve

Wow just came upon this thread. I just purchased a prop shaft seal and cav rod seal from D21 a few days ago. I guess I will not be using it now. Outdrive could you give me a little more information on the one you wound up going with would like to check it out. Have also thought about going with the PSS shaft seal.

It’s basically a copy of the plastic seal except in billet. He also uses the graphite rope like a jet boat instead of the white rope and he gives you a spanner wrench to tighten it.

Peterson is a pretty smart guy, he didn’t invent anything new, just made it look a little nicer. It’s only 100 bucks for the 1 1/8.

You guys may have better luck with the D21. In my case it almost took down my boat. If I had my floor in I would have never seen it.

I was mistaken about the casting numbers in my Cole. They are 61000-1/61000-2. See attached pix

i have run the D21 prop seal on two boats for the last two year. I have had zero issues and zero leaks. Just my 2 cents
