I watched the first 2 episodes of Chernobyl. It is riveting! Amazing drama - really well done. Highly recommended

The new limited series (5 episodes), co-starring Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgard, is a fittingly grave re-telling of one of the worst human disasters in modern history.

It makes perfect sense that “Chernobyl” feels more like a horror movie at times than a traditional drama. Tracing the catastrophe events before, during, and after the nuclear explosion that continues to send radioactive ripples throughout Europe to this day, the HBO’s new limited series is, in fact, recounting one of the modern era’s most devastating, human horrors, and the series doesn’t shy away from showing it as just that. To its credit, this iteration of the story — or more accurately, the many interlocking stories of the meltdown and its aftershocks — leans into the horror of it all rather than blinking away, as so many tried to do when it happened in real life. Rather than bursting into shocking twists, writer Craig Mazin and director Johan Renck build a steadily creeping unease, allowing the scale of the atrocity to sink in with terrible, fitting gravity.

IMO there haven't been many better displays of selfless bravery than that of helicopter crews ignoring certain death to drop pitifully small loads of concrete on the destroyed reactor as it spewed radioactive smoke and steam.

Actually not a bad idea at all. There's so much radiation already in space. Just shoot that shit out and let it go on forever (or until it hits something or burns up in entry to a planet).
But not on a Soviet launch vehicle !

I've often thought that shooting it at the sun would have it incinerate somewhere near the sun. My fear is the damn rocket blowing up trying to get off the planet, spreading the cargo back on Earth.

At 90 million a launch for a Falcon Heavy, for only 16,000lbs of payload to exit earth orbit, i don't know if that is really economically viable...

There are people floating the idea of shooting that shit into space to be rid of it. Not sure if that is a good idea or a bad idea but it was an interesting take none the less.

Fucking terrible idea. Only takes one thing to go wrong and now you have Nuclear waste in the upper atmosphere and plummeting back to a huge area on earth etc..

Do you have that much faith in launching shit into space that you could possibly destroy a half a continent if something / anything went wrong?

Wasn’t that long ago a bunch of astronauts died just trying to get to orbit.

NO one will consider shooting radioactive debris into space - if the booster blows up it would be a radiological disaster - possibly worse than the event itself.

Simply decay heaters and mini satellite nukes are controversial as is.

But not on a Soviet launch vehicle !

Numerically speaking the soyuz lifter is pretty good - right up there wit the best.
note Atlas 5 is a Soviet RD180 based lifter - so the Soviets are pretty safe and competitive but I don't think anyone wants to take the risk regardless.

I think the disposal of it in space as it can decay millions of light years away was the crux of the argument about ridding it in space. You are definitely correct in the risk associated with using conventional rocket technology and how that could multiply the problem. No argument there.

If a new tech was invented (space elevator or something equivalent) to safely transport it I think that it would be a decent alternative.

I am more concerned with the santa susana field lab in van nuys. They had a reactor melt down there buy it was in the early days. Site has been highly radioactive ever since. Storing waste at san onofre is incredibly stupid. Launch it at the sun.

Classic Soviet move - attempt to take a good mans legacy away because he didnt play ball....

History paints a 180 degree out verdict and memorializes his name and deeds forever.

What a totally incompetent shit show - total deaths 31.....uh huh...

I knew about some of the tech issues from prior discussion/reading but the utter ridiculousness of the botched "test" scenario was new info to me.

I just watched the whole series in one setting. Long flight from Bucharest. Not really all that far from Chernobyl. Anyway... It was amazingly well done, but I have a few thoughts after:

1) I posted earlier in this thread asking if any knew what the official death toll was. At the end of the final episode it shows the typical 50,000 from X, Y and Z. But the fact is, that has not been documented. For example the 3 divers all lived. I think two are still alive, and one died of heart disease. The official total of deaths from Chernobyl is 42 directly and less than 100 documented since. Big, but considering what we've been told, pretty small. Heck there have been worse coal mine cave ins, even recently.

If greenies were serious about Climate Change, they would embrace, endorse, expand nuclear power. It is the safest form of power we've ever had, even when you include Chernobyl.

2) Socialism sucks. Did then, and still does. You have to lie to the people to get it to work, and it still doesn't. How the flyin' flip can a guy like Bernie Sanders be seriously contending for President? And how can an immature imbecile like AOC be representing anyone in this country?

Whoa there.....that's in Simi Valley / Chatsworth hills. Van Nuys is nuclear safe :D

They're gonna have to put it all into Yucca mountain or similar. No other choice. Can't shoot it off in a rocket, that's a very stupid idea. Also they can't keep them in temporary casks forever.

I have a feeling with all the stuff they're doing at CERN and LHC, they'll accidentally figure out a way to turn radioactive stuff non-radioactive. That would help!

After the original structure was failing they tried to raise funds to fix it and came up massively short.

It’s only nuclear waste after all?

Hence EU.

Fukushima is a whole different thing nobody is talking about and everyone is turning a blind eye too. That fucking thing is killing the pacific and nobody seems to care.

Warm temperatures are also killing the Pacific and Conservatives don’t seem to care...

So I just finished the series tonight...

If you haven't seen it, it's worth the watch. It does get depressing at times, but it's a very well acted show.

Pretty amazing how fucked up that whole situation was, and still is to this day.

This is kind of an interesting read...

Good entertainment but pretty skewed from a historical prospective.

Probably to be expected trying to cram a very broad event into a character driven drama.

I am not quite sure what he means either. Although I watched it awhile ago, I seem to remember it jibed with the 3 books I had read on it. If I remember, maybe the firefighter was a composite character but all the officials were based on real people.
