I need to buy a truck that weighs under 5K lbs so it could be towed four wheels down from my Class A RV while also being able to tow up to 5K lbs for the boat. It seems my choices are limited and my wife likes the Colorado so I would like opinions from those who have this vehicle or are knowledgeable of it.

Thanks much in advance for any replies.

I had a 19 ZR-2 and towed my Mach22 with it, towed it fine and was a nice truck to drive when not towing. I would have kept it but a screaming deal was had on a Sprinter van. The ZR-2 is pretty capable off road as well.

I have a gmc canyon 2 wd and it's been issue free. It's a work truck. Gets started and stopped 25 times a day. Usually keep +-500 pounds in the back and get around 18 overall per tank.

I guess your options are limited if your wife likes the Colorado 😁 you could always throw her a curveball and get the GMC Canyon 😁

Others in that category are the Tacoma, Gladiator and whatever Nissan has. Did I miss any?

As for the Colorado/Canyon you can find all the info you need here: https://www.coloradofans.com/forums/

If possible, stay away from the baby Duramax ones. Aside from sounding like an NPR, they use oil. Not real bad, but at 50k or so I know of three that burn a quart every 1000mi. Seems excessive to me. BUT, the little F'rs can seem to tow decent.

My dad just traded in his newer diesel Colorado.. It was unreliable because of the consistent issues he had with the exhaust emissions. He would pull a small travel trailer and unfortunately each trip ended up in a problem (mostly in the middle of no where). He wanted to get rid of it while it was still under warranty and traded in on a F-150 ecoboost :)

Very cool smaller trucks. I think they would make a great towed. They are rated for such as well with the 4wd. You'd be surprised how many are not rated for 4 wheel flat towing.

I have owned three Colorado's , a 4 cylinder, a 5 cylinder and a 5.3 LS. Put 387,000 miles on the 4 cyl. sold it locally and it is still running three years later. I have 260,000 on my 2007 with the 5 cylinder and it runs like new. Just brakes and batteries and oil changes. I have had more trouble free miles with them than other small trucks I have owned. The 2012 LS 4X4 is a garage queen and only has 70,000 on it.

We got our son a 2020 crew cab Colorado, gas V6, standard box with a mild lift on it. So far so good. He loves the truck. We’ve towed our 20.5’ Carrera daycruiser with zero issues. Pulls the grades with ease and still feels in control on the way down. I would definitely recommend. 👍

Its a little truck that looks like a big truck! I like them. Way better than the other smaller truck options IMO.

I tow a Wrangler Unlimited, but sometimes I drag the 2018 F150, it's not as heavy as it looks. I was going to get a Colorado, but for the price, the Ford was the better buy and the same weight. The F150 tows behind the Moho easily

Gave the Colorado a good look, as I’m a Chevy guy. It was cheaper to get a Tacoma. Keep in mind, if you’re looking late model CC V6 4x4, these trucks will weigh closer to 5500 lb. I have a Tacoma review in the truck section, including towing.

I flat tow a 2018, 2.8 diesel, ZR2. 50,000 mile no issues at all and no oil burning. I do like the size of the truck. I haven’t towed with it And wish it had a little more getup and go.

Thanks to all for your responses. I didn't see where the new Ranger could be towed four wheels down and all the others I looked up are over 5k lbs. If someone knows of another vehicle that falls in the under 5 K weight/tow 5K please reply.

Just got rid of our GMC Canyon works trucks (3) all had about 140k+ miles on them the only problems we had on all three was a fuel sending unit and one truck had a rear diff go out just past warranty but the dealer made it right. Only had to pay labor. Great little trucks and I pulled my prostar190 with it without any issues. We switched to full size Silverado’s and man do I miss the turning radius and parking of the canyon!!

Buddy has a new Bison dialed in with 33's.

Thing is a monster offroad and the 3.6 is a solid engine with the 8 speed auto.

Prices are crazy for a v6 mid size but they are nice.

I got a 16 Canyon "Mini Max", 4x4, CCSB

Perfect truck for my purposes. Double Duty..

weighs just about 5k outfitted with shell and 2 tool boxes.

I flat tow it behind a gasser class A and tows my Lavey very nicely..

I've read some continuing issues with emission crap on some. I had 2 emissions sensors go bad early on but no issues since..

I'm love'n this truck and it's supposed the last new truck I'll ever buy... but goes without saying.... we'll just see how that goes ...

GM will discontinue the "Mini Max" in 2023, 4 cyl gas turbo will be the only power option for the twins. I assume in No America because the US military just contracted for a shit load of ZR2s powered with the 2.8l diesel
