Wife's pops knew him and worked with him at Muroc/Edwards in the '50's.
We ran into him at PIR during a cup race, and he remembered her.

My grandfather and him worked together years ago when they were testing the X-1. My grandfather wired him up with ECG sensors to see what happened when he broke the sound barrier. We even have a piece of the cockpit glass. (framed behind glass of course) He was a amazing man. RIP to a legend.

I often wonder that if the movie "The Right Stuff" hadn't been produced if most people would even know who he was. He and his cohorts had and job to do and did it to the best of their ability. They did it largely anonymously.

General Yeager had a distinguished career even without the X-1 program but I bet most people on the street are not even aware of those facts.

97 is a good run, blue skies and tailwinds Sir.

Edwards AFB did not allow Chuck to fly the aircraft solo for that commemorative flight.
I grew up at Edwards (1959 to 1968) I knew the family as well as other famous Test Pilots quite well.
After my AF commitment I worked at Edwards for 29 years as a Mission Controller and Airspace Manager for R-2508 Complex.
If anyone is interested in knowing more of the history of Edwards AFB you can call the Archives Specialist for the EDW AFB Museum and ask
if they have any copies of the Edwards AFB Then and Now paper back books.

Well, I know the daughters from back in High School, Sharon and Susan.
Chuck, their father got remarried and left all of the the Chuck Yeager legacy to his new wife's children.
I was attending an Experimental Test Pilot function and happened to be seated with retired pilots Col Joe Cotton and Col Fitz Fulton and I believe Bob Cardenas.
I brought up the subject about Chuck, their response was less than flattering.
If anyone is really curious look up the crash of an NF 104 that Chuck was piloting .
There were so many brave test pilots at Edwards back in the days and I am so proud to have known them and their families.
I am so sad that most of them are no longer with us. I do try to stay in touch with their children.
It was a great time as a teenager to grow up at Edwards AFB.

Bob Cardenas was a true Mexican/American success story and a real badass. All these fockers crying about inequalities should look at someone like Bob and shut the Fock and get to workin really hard.
