Racers cut the skegs off the SSMIII and SSMIIIA drives starting in the very early 80's. Reportedly for speed. Gained anywhere from 2 to 4 mph on the race course sans skeg. I believe Richie Powers was the first to do this and it caught on. Buddy had a set of 3's on his 38 Scarab he got from Teague that had the skegs cut off too.

Correct. I am considering have Vern replace the lowers with ones that have skegs but yes they are rumored to be faster due to the to deep X

I think adding skegs would just slow ya down. The drives are buried so deep, there is more than enough drive in the water at speed for good steering.

Need the painter to bring back the hood vents to reinstall. Gonna try and lay down the carbon pinstripes tomorrow and then he can come clear coat it a few times. Then I’ll reinstall the rub rail and then it’s off to Vern to overhaul the drives

Just now seeing this thread, boat looks awesome. Ever since H20Toie posted the pic's of his new to him Cig I've been noticing them more and more. If I ever buy another boat of this type it would most likely be a Cig, I've become a huge fan. Your boat is going to stand out wherever it goes. 👍

Are those number 5 drives? Is it common for the skegs to be removed?

Boat is looking great.

Number 3s. They look similar but a 5 is shorter x factor and based off the later and stronger 3A. The removal was mentioned earlier to be rumored to make the boats faster for racing as the 3s were to deep an X
