I've always been into bugs and I'd really like to build up a Class 5 car... Not to race so much as to just have a fun desert toy. I figured there might be some inmates that are into these little cars... Let's see um!

Something like this is what I'm thinking :thumbsup

I had a 68 I was building ....It had a turbo charged 2180 ,converted into a tube car practically ... I sold it and bailed.... Had 14000 into and it seemed like I was working on it more than driving it ... I miss it every now and then but enjoy my XP RZR much more ....

Plus my next step would put me over the 25,000 dollar mark .... It needed a Heavy duty trans ...the 091 was going .... and Suspension upgrades to coilover would made it a pricey car ... There are a lot of Nice Class 5 play cars going for 10,000 to 15,000 .... If I ever get one again I will Let someone else lose there money ..LOL

For sure. I've always dug the look of the Baja bug and the versatility of it. you can drive it off road on the street in the dunes or the liquor store. Some day I'll get rid of my rhino for one but until then the rhino will have to do

Didn't do a bug but built a Thing. Here's some pics and some of BrianB's 2 cars too... Just play cars nothing too serious suspension wise but still fun.

Class 5s are cool. I've been checking out alot of baja bugs. Some stretched, big power with LS1s. I wouldn't mind having one but need four seats, so a class5 wouldn't work. Ever since this helmet deal for side by sides in Cali came down I've been looking harder. I told the wife I would put heated seats in it and she likes that idea.:D Let's see some more pics.:thumbsup

Yeah! See that's what I'm talking about. Fun custom little cars that you can drive to the store or take to the dunes :thumbsup

That was the 1st thing that popped in my head too. I've looking around a bit for a project Thing to do something similar.

You guys are killing me here. If my back wasn't trashed I would probably be in one of these things...up to my ears.
I think of all the cash dumped into the side by side deal and then think about how cool a baja I could have...
The only thing that I can see as a downfall is no 4x4 and the physical size of the thing trying to get into tight trails or even the trailer.
But this still goes through my mind...all the time.
The tricked out Things are way cool, too. Never thought of that.

X2?. I realize everyone has a difference in opinion on SXS vs. Baja?s, etc? But I don?t get it. Baja?s and such are still vey maneuverable even in the tight stuff. My buddies and I use the snot out of our off road cars and have gotten into some hairy stuff. Yes having 4 wheel drive would have been nice but we still got to where we needed to.

I have many friends that have SxS?s and they are cool but they have dropped a ton of money into them and at the end of the day it doesn?t have a CA license plate. For what they all spent they could have had a really nice street legal off road car. I guess it comes down to being able to finance most of it. Regardless of how much money they have all spent on all of the bells and whistles, long travel, suspension, etc? I still don?t feel safe in them. For me and my group of friends the Manx?s, Baja?s, and Things are all street legal and money well spent.

I would think a Baja Bug would be a lot more fun to drive than a SXS.

no i bought it as a basic baja already cut up with standard travel. i have people ask me that all the time though they wanna ring my neck for having a cut up oval window. I would love to have it untouched/stock. as a matter of fact ive been debating trying to trade it to someone for a clean cal style bug.

This THING is pretty bad ass! I saw it for sale for awhile on The Samba, and Race Dezert. The owner also used to go into my buddies restaurant in Burbank quite a bit. I think most of the fab work was done by Daren at Prowlers...?

I have 2 friends that both have VW Things. They are street legal and each have about 20" of travel. One has a Chevy Shortstar in it, and the other has a Nissan 300 Z motor in it.

I just picked this one up. It's built like a brick shit house. FAT performance 1915 with UMP air filter connected to dual 44 Webers, beefed up bus tranny, 3x3 rear, Fox w/remote bypass, front pushed out 6" and widened 3", Cal plated, 4 wheel Wilwood disc, bead locks, full cage, radio, headsets, Jaz fuel cell, Mastercraft seats with Cal DOT DJ 5 points, etc... It's a runner, it's fresh and should be a great car. No expense was spared.
