For a 2014 F150, WTF. Got this in the mail yesterday and why? It's not used for any business purposes at all. Matter of fact it's a garage queen at only 46k miles.

Any vehicle with an open pickup bed is classified as a commercial vehicle, in California.

I put a shell on my truck went to AAA and they removed the commercial fees which were roughly 250 dollars. I bought the shell, prepped it for paint and painted myself and bought a new side window for it all in for less than 700.00, next years savings will pay for that.

All trucks in CA are commercial.
A few ways around that, but if you ever get caught without the shell (one way to get it removed from fees), the fines are not worth it.

It's always been that way and on the previous year registrations it was commonly denoted in the upper left hand corner as COML, another year it shows as Commercial middle left side.
My brand new 67' El Camino was also commercial until I put a shell on it. But one day driving to work with the shell off and I got stopped and scolded but let off with a warning.
This certainly isn't a new thing.

My bad, I guess I'm that guy this morning. Could be because its windy AF and I'm trying to mount my bed rails for the 5th wheel in my truck.

My apologies, carry on 🤣🤣

Same here. Shell on the 2500 and registered non-commercial.

We were going to my son's Football games on Saturday mornings towing the boat and leaving for Castiac lake after the game and needed a better place to lock our skis, tube...... than the back seat.

I'm going to have to do that . Shell has been on it since day after picking it up. I have no plans of taking it off.

Anyone just pay a registration in AZ on a 2019 3/4 ton? My Ram 2500 was $900 in Cali and I’m curious what the difference is.

I had that happen on my 69, the CHP took my plates off and kept them and I only had the shell off to get to repaired.

I have been told its not that easy anymore. There have been some changes to that rule on the last few years.

I believe @Riverbound had some issues trying to do so with his old Ram

Every time one of you guys opens a thread like this, it makes me so glad I never moved to CA. I'll give you the fact our weather is far less than ideal but the s**t you have to put up with just makes me shake my head.

I had no issues 2 years ago, the hardest part was AAA trying to figure out what to register it as. I had a small blow up mattress with me and I always have 2 blankets under the back seat.

Used AAA as well. They looked at the truck with the shell on it and changed the registration for us. No issues.

In AZ it’s not much better for newer cars, at all, but goes down substantially after 5 years.

This is for my 2019 f250:
(50 bucks is for my plate though)

In CA look for the weight fee, this determines the extra $$ collected. NV, is high too, but it goes down quickly after 5 years. But then again we DO NOT have ANY corporate or personal income tax. Nice trade off indeed.

In Ca both my 2002 F250 and F350 were registered commercial, by the state, and were about $325 to $350 each to register for 1 year. In Az the F250 is not really commercial so like $86 for the year. The F350 is commercial because it's a 1 ton I guess. So a little more fees and have to declare weight. I choose 15K GCWR. $220 a year. My street legal 2003 CR250 is $10.30 a year and that includes the off road decal.

Correct. What does my location have to do with what happens with California registration fees?

Just curious, why you would care what happens over in California? Especially when you moved out of there over to Arizona?

Life will be far less stressful, to let them worry about all their issues. They have plenty to deal with. 🤔

Mine was $3700. Wanna trade?
Per truck or fleet? What is the minimum insurance coverage amount for commercial vehicles that have CA #s, motor carrier permit, and that other stuff?

So I need to just not say ANYTHING when it has to do with California? Even though lived there for 33 years and only moved away a year and a half ago?

This registration question has come up several times here. I was talking about things that were discussed on RDP related to this topic.

And let’s not forget about the $32.00 public safety fee that was added last year or the year before. So the state could make some additional money.

this is another thing that's deterring me from a newer truck looking at a 2018 2500 hd i would assume close to a grand in registration:mad:

no it’s not, just had my 19 yo diesel 3500 c&c with a 12 ft utility bed converted to a utility in the automotive category. California was about to stop processing the registration on it because it was 20 years old so I took the bed off added a standard 8 foot Dooley bed and put a topper on the back, went to AAA and it’s done.

You have to find the right person to do it. 😉 you got lucky and got the good one up front. Trust me had to go to multiple DMV and AAA on my last one. Eventually found the guy that had common sense.

That goes away June 30, 2021. I just registered my '19 Silverado for two years. 1st year included it but 2nd year didn't.

The bullshit fee was to fund Arizona Dept of Public Safety. They used to be funded out of fuel taxes, but some dick in the legislature decided that, rather than soaking everyone who drives in the state when they gas up, they'll just soak residents when they register their vehicles. Everyone threatened to recall all the legislators, if they didn't get rid of it. Where DPS will get their funding now, is up in the air. They'll probably sneak some other tax or fee in somewhere.

my AAA rep told me when registering my dually that the only way would be to permanently attach a camper with a toilet and bed. if you're ever caught without it (go figure california loves to search for revenue...) theres a huge fine. i have a tonneau cover on the truck all the time and it wasnt good enough, nor was a camper shell. must be some type of actual living camper.

In my experience Arizona is not any cheaper then Cali on new vehicles. My Harley was $100 more for AZ registration. After the vehicle is 10 years old AZ is the way to go.

This is what I found out on my last 3500, then they wanted to se the camper and charge personal property tax on it.

Its cheaper than CA MUCH sooner than 10 years. This is the annual license fee for a 2021 vehicle in AZ that had a MSRP of $65k (NOT purchase price)....
