Gary was the parts manager when I was the lot boy at Chick Iverson in Newport Beach. He probably wouldn't remember me but Bernard ran the shop and I reported up to him back in those days (late 70s early 80s).

I have seen and spent time looking around that Gamund car - it really does look authentic in the way it was restored. Literally, 1 of a kind! You mentioned some of its history - but wasn't it also the first Porsche to ever win a race?

...Not sure about “a race” but definitely first Porsche to win at the 24hrs of Le Mans...

It was the first factory backed car to win.

At some point someone cut the roof off of it. Emory put the roof back on. Porsche museum has a copy of this car. You know you have some uber rare when you have the real deal and the museum has the copy. Nuts

...100% true...the new roof was rolled out in 2 halves...split right down the middle...front to back...watched one of the guys weld the 2 halves together...
...not sure if they built a wooden buck first ...to get the shape for this top deal...but they do use bucks for some of their shaping...

i finally put one in my driveway but iv always been a big fan of the early 60's impala's they can pull off the stock, lowrod and lowrider look and it just works well with that style car but the 60-61 oldsmobile's have always caught my eye too.

...So a little more on Emory Motorsports...
...This is how it all started...These are some of the cars that were built by the brothers Emory..,Gary, Don and Kenny’s father...Niel Emory and their uncle Clayton Jensen..In short “Valley Custom”...The pic is from 1953 and the location is from what Gary remembers..,the now sight of The Castaway restaurant in the foothills overlooking Burbank...I say it is the lot below the restaurant...but I’ve been wrong before???...
...What did Valley Custom use to shape metal...Telephone poles,...rocks..or whatever was lying around...If they really needed an English wheel...They would use a buddies down the road...
...From what Gary said Friday...They really had very few tools...Now that I think about it...When I finally got Gary to take me over and show me his dads shop...that would have been around 1960 or’61???...I walked in expecting to see some exotic tools...I didn’t see any...What I saw was several different forms of metal...sort of spread around the floor...My guess would be future pieces of customs or past pieces of cars that became customs???...
...Rod who learned his craft from his grandfather...(let’s be real here Rod is more than a craftsman...indeed he is an exceptional artist)...anyway Rod has in his posession the hand tools used by his grandpops...

So they started in hot rods? Moved to VW's and now Porsches? That's a cool history, they are possibly the best classic Porsche shop in the world.

...Gary is back into his hot rods up in Oregon...He took over the Outlaw/Special shop on his 50 acres...when Rod moved his operation to So Cal...
...This car started I believe as a ‘39 standered coupe...It is a car done by ValleyCustom in the late ‘50’s or early ‘’60’s...Several years ago a guy was looking at a car to buy somewhere deep in the depths of Los Angeles...
...To look at the car he wanted he had to walk by this car that was full of beer cans and trash...One thing led to another and Gary’s brother Don and Gary’s dad went up and took a look...Garys dad verified that it was a Valley Custom car...A deal was made and the car went to Dons house...Don learned from and worked with his father for decades...Don is equally as skilled as both his dad and Rod...So Don has taken the car back to this point...and it now sits and waits it’s turn in line at Rods So Cal shop...looks to me like it might be a long wait???...and it certainly not going to fit in one of the Porsche’s rotisserie’s???...So we will see how this plays out???...
...It is going to be brought back as a convert and not as the coupe probably a removable Carson type top???...
...Up close and personal ...what Don has done so far is really very very nice...

Being a Ford fan, this is hard to admit, but...

I'm digin the 70's A body GM cars lately. Why?

The ride. The last two I built drove like a 7 Series BMW. Smooth. Quiet, but just a tad mushy for my tastes.

Hopefully the one I am building right now will have the Perfect ride. The suspension is 100% Hotchkis with a brand new Mosier rear end. 17's all around with 45 series tires. I also put in a quick ratio gear box, so I'm hoping it drives lie a go kart!

Been in my shop a little over a year. Should be done by next month.

I've had a lot of A bodies, they are great cars. My G body had the Hotchkis stuff on it and it helped quite a bit. That car should do very well.

I dated one of the Emory girls in the late 80's. She drove a Porsche that her dad had restored. They did incredible work in that shop. Weird coming across this thread. Small world...

If you need the sunroof panel headliner (just for the slider), I have a couple of extra genuine NOS ivory perf panels.

Thanks for the offer that’s very nice of you. I actually just got the new headliner installed. It goes in next week to have the carpet and new interior installed.

His shop in Fallbrook on the same property as their home. I don't remember any Roll's specifically, but they were doing a lot of Porsche's and some other high end cars.

I ran into Sharpshooter last weekend and he asked me what's my favorite dream car? I told him a two tone 55 Chevy 210 Post just like this sweet ride...

Good seeing you again!

Here's a few pics starting with your neighbors car.

I love the styling of older cars and the creativity they had back then changing up body lines every couple of years. Cars had more character back in the day!

Stopped at a friends shop yesterday...He does mostly Porsches. I was really disappointed the 356 speedster he had there, turned out to be a replica.

There is a great 20 min. film about this car and Emory here - very well done.

View attachment 636987 View attachment 636988 ...Here is the big money car...The Gamund...Won the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1951...the 1100cc class...When the Resto was completed it’s value was estimated to be right around $19 mil...in the 2 years since completion the estimated value has grown a bunch...to what I don’t know???...
...At some point in the future it will most likely end up in the Porsche museum in Germany...
...dulled finish...hand painted numbers ...just like it was in ‘51...

...Great film...looks to me like the buck I photoed is what they used to form the top...
...Don’t remember seeing the buck when the guy was welding the two halves of the top together...Then again that particular day was a little unusual...Gary and I were giving a tour of where we grew up to Diane...Diane had been Dons girlfriend for 2 years in grammar school...(who has a girlfriend for 2 years while in grammar school)...apparently Don Emory...lol...

...This is the home that the Emory’s grew up in...about a half mile from me now and for that matter then...it would take a volume to explain the neighborhood ...has quite an interesting history...The Patriarch Neil Emory built a split rail fence across the front in the ‘40’s...from cuttings from telephone poles I believe???...It lasted until just s few months ago...The Emory’s moved in the early ‘60’s...Members of the family that bought it still live there...including the 89 year old patriarch of that family...The owners son tried to save the old split rail but he ended up having to build a new one...So much of the home is so original it’s hard to believe...The Emory mothers stove from the ‘40’s is still in use today...
