Water pickups...how big/deep is too big? I’ve got two of these large water pickups feeding a 1” magnaflow and the other force fed to the coolers and Casale. I’ve heard the Magnaflows will only build so much pressure and the vanes will fold over. Just wondering if they should be trimmed or shortened to avoid too much pressure or drag.

Also, any suggestions on setting up a pressure relief valve? What PSI or at what MPH, etc is it necessary to be functioning and set up correctly?

I've run -16 in to strainer then-16 to Magnaflow pump and -12's out, same with inter cooler. vdrive and oil cooler have their own system. No pressure relief on my stuff, boats too slow.

Wondering if the ‘scoops’ are too big. We’ve trimmed them when we were drag racing but that’s a different deal

My setup is the same as this. As for my pickups they are cut so that the trailing edge is protruding about maybe a 1/16” past the plate. The leading edge of the pickup maybe 1 1/2” of material in front of pickup was taken away from the plate so everything is pretty much flush with the bottom of the boat.

I have similar size scoops on my Hallett, they are on the bottom of the hull instead of the plate. I think the plate is a better setup. The only thing I would like to change on mine is add gate valves at the pick ups, in the event a hose comes apart it can be shut off.

Yea, UCH has an 1-1/2 hose connection in the bottom of the boat to a rubber hose. When I pulled the motor out that made my butt pucker.

Yes sir. I've had to swim under and put a rag in the pick up before(different boat), the gate valve would be MUCH easier.

I had thought of some type of valve. I will add that to my list just thinking of your statement.

Could you post a pic of yours? Or maybe it’s that attachment but it comes up as an error.

I would be uncomfortable with the depth of your pickup. I have never had a cooling problem with any of my v-drives, and never had the pickups extending that far.

3/8" depth max, usually less than like, like 1/4" to 3/16" is plenty if you do a little relief in the surface leading up to it.

Anybody know what kind of water pressures theses big pickups make? Force feeding oil cooler and Casale on mine and curious to know

Here’s a post I clipped from an Offshore site. Used this data when I fabbed up a drive shower for my Bravo 1, numbers appear fairly spot on.

Holy Crap! did you measure it for comparison? I had no idea the pressures were that high.
It’s a theoretical value dependent upon temp., density, etc. But to get you in the ballpark of what you’ll see, it’s pretty close.
I capped off the transom fresh water feed on my Bravo and went with a transom pick-up And strainer. Dumping water is a must now. I’m using the bravo’s pick-up for a drive shower (Here’s a pic of the mock-up).
