Cost to re-gelcoat an Ultra 23 and add a used 496 or 525.

I have been shopping for a Ultra shadow 23 or Placecraft for a little while now. Ran into a damaged Ultra that was a flamed gelcoat and is missing motor. Since it was flames anyway and that isn't my style this just may work. Needs a little fiberglass work and then I would choose a simple clean gel scheme.

What would that really cost to completely regel?

What would a used 496HO or 525 go for?

What do you think this boat should sell for as is?

I can't give you an assessment for the gel work.

For a turnkey motor only, not including install, rigging and misc. stuff you are looking at $8000 to $12000. The 496HO would be closer to the low end number and the 525 would likely be the higher number+.

That's not bad at all. I was thinking a used 496 would be in the tune of $14000. I searched craigslist and came up with nada.

If I was you, I would look at building a brand new Shockwave or Tahiti Deck boat. They would be in the same price range brand new as you would have into redoing everything on the Ultra and buying a used engine. Some food for thought for you.

496 = 15-18 installed
525 = 25-30 installed

Gel, call Rusty, but based on damage etc, I would say 15-20

Cost of that boat as it sits = 4500

Wouldn't a brand new hull be 15-20ish at that length? Seems like gel should be under 10k no?

Just speculating.

Looks like it has damage that still needs to be fixed. My guestament was structural repair + gel.

The gel is going to be hard to quote because a lot of it would depend on the next design. Straight lines and traditional vs some crazy scheme with fades and all sorts of shit could vary that program quite a bit.

I'm the last guy to ask for pricing but if the boat was derigged and they just had to fix that spot and gel something traditional I didn't own rdp I'd grind em into the 13k-15 area. That all said If you want crazy shit with ghosted in this and faded in that.. skies the limit.

I'm assuming that other damaged area is solid and doesn't need to be redone and you are leaving the top "windshield" area for lack of a better term alone.

Boat itself looks like a 15-17k program to me, also assuming it has everything needed to drop in a motor and trailer is decent.

I could be way off.. like I said I'm the worst guy to ask for pricing but those would be the numbers I'd be expecting for retail. 496Ho as someone's else said 7-9k depending on hours. I think preston has a couple of them.

I'd say 10-15 is in the ball park for a reputable shop, but could be less if just repair and keep the main white and just add graphic and or match white to cover the flames

I bought a 27 Shadow with no motor/drive and it added up quickly.

500efi - $8,500
X Drive - $5,000
Rigging - $6,000
Exhaust Tails - $1500

It adds up FAST...Whatever you feel like offering, lower it. Whatever you are budgeting to finish it, raise it.

I'd personally fix the damage and then do a wrap.

I was looking at this one as well.. I agree with others that have said "it adds up quick", seems like nothing comes in under budget. You'll spend thousands just getting that gel fixed/re-done.

Consider paint over gel. Paint will be more cost effective and easier to do, plus it can look better if done right. Gel is a pain to do.
Have you priced out MerCruiser re-manufactured engines? Great deals, full warranty and basically new.

Be careful!
Maybe the question you should ask first is what should this boat sell for if it was tits?
Do the math on making it tits, then move down to Coles post...

Like mentioned expect it to take 3x as long and cost twice as much as you are told.:)
Do the math again, add 15% and there's your number.

I understand what you want, but with a proper repair I think I could live with that gel, or at least it could be done at a later date. Don't think you'll save that much by doing them together.

Unless you're the guy that can do ALL the work himself. Has the time and enjoys that stuff, don't even try to rehab this boat.
And to completely regal the boat is crazy. You're gonna had to have the boat completely disassemble and re assembled. New trim inside and out and the carpet will probably have to be replaced. That alone is going to be 2 to 3 k for the labor and another $1500 to &2000 for the carpet. It's going to. Red way more than you think. Estimate how much you think it's gonna cost, get your estimates and then add 40%. Oops the wireing is rotten. Oops the tanks got crude in them, oops a little soft wood, oops some of the seat bases are. As, oops need new instruments ,cables ?? Gonna do all that work and then not spend the extra 10% of the job to replace all the other stuff ? How about trailer tires, lights, brakes ? Is all that good ? Easily dump another $2000 there.

But the motor and drive is good !! At least that's what the guy who sold it to me said. If not, another $8,000 minimum. But ya can't stop now, already invested $30,000 plus. Seen this done many time, never seen it work out well. The people who have it now have already done the math, as I see they started it.

I bought a 496 and drive a few years ago. Got it in the boat. Ram good on the trailer. Took it to the lake....... needed a new fuel pump. &1200 plus labor. Then the computer went bad an hour later. Found a guy who reprograms them for $250. But not this one. Huh ? Another &1600 plus labor. Plus the time and trouble, never ends.

I sold my used 496 HO earlier this year for $7000. It had 165 hours on it. I had just put on the cp stainless water pump assembly with billet pulley and the msd spark plug wire set. FYI. There is a 496 HO and XR out drive for sale in the spam section.
