Few more from today. Won’t lie, I’m ready for fall weather.
Haven’t seen Steamboat this quiet in a couple years. Very quiet on the lake. Random group of lake lice close to the pump station. Other than that it’s pretty dead out here.

Guy came by the other day wanting to ski . . . View attachment 1048498 View attachment 1048499

Skiing before or after he re-paints the interior of the boat ? 🤯
I had one just like him shit on me while flying overhead down by Mission Bay one day. Standing in the parking lot, door open on my El Camino, shootin the shit with my fishin buddy.
Started hearing this splattering sound and I'm looking around trying to figure out what and where 🤔 Just about the moment I noticed huge white splotches hitting the pavement, this massive wave of white Heron shit hit me and my El Camino like an aerial bomber dropping retardant on a fire 🤮🤮🤮
I got covered, my buddy covered, my El Camino covered part of the interior including the cloth bucket seat.
I have no idea how many gallons that large grey shit-bird dropped, but had to be close to a Homer Bucket full and the stench was horrible. 🤬🤬🤬

So yup, he's a real cutie alright, I sincerely hope that's not your boat. 😂

Try having a nest with newborns 60' up over your deck in a pine tree. Mom & pops bring 8" mackerel home all day to feed the chicks... heads falling onto your party from above and they wake your ass at 4:30am needing a feeding. Lotsa fun.... and this is my 4th generation in that tree! I do love having these dinasurish like birds around but dang they're loud and stanky when nesting.

I enjoy watching them sit motionless and stalk their next meal. Even several miles inland from the San Diego coast, but situated above a lake, we get the Great White Egrets on occasion.
They have a healthy appetite for our many lizards. Watching them stalk and then hypnotize the lizard, to the point he simply allows them to pick him up and swallow him is amazing to watch.
Once one spots a lizard, they perform this neck weaving dance, very similar in motion to what we think of as the Egyptian Ladies dance, where they're head appears to move gracefully side to side. In this case, the head remains stationary, with only the neck in a side to side motion.
As the neck dance is being performed, the Egret very slowly keeps advancing forward until eventually he's posed right above the lizard, never having stopped the neck motion.
The lizard, who appears frozen in place, seems helpless as the bird simply lowers it's beak and picks up the lizard and down the hatch.

After watching this several times, I just had to try it. So finding a lizard perched on top of a short stucco wall, I did my best imitation of Great Egret.
To my delight and surprise, it worked. Lizard remained completely frozen in a trance and let me tell you, they taste like SHIT. 🤮 😁

During my pre-teen years my best childhood buddy's family moved from Lake Arrowhead to CDM, I bet really close to where you live. Very pretty white Spanish style home, with a large lot and backyard. I remember it was on a corner lot and I'm pretty sure the side street dead ended close to there due to the canyon behind.
Down in the canyon below there was a large storm drain, I recall us exploring it one, following it all the way to the bay.

I had no idea they nested in trees, I've only see them nesting at Lake Havasu on their own island down past Havasu Springs. That's a damned big bird to next in a tree and I'd hate to have one living over my head.

"What's Up PussyCat" ? 😁
I just provided some excellent survivalist info, I should make a YouTube video and get rich 😂
Although I'm not sure I'd want to try that with a very large lizard, he'd probably latch onto your nose. A large black lizard latched onto my buddy's arm when we were kids, started doing the "alligator death roll", I had to beat that fucker into submission with pliers to get him to let go.

Wife was wondering if it was going to unload while sitting there. There’s about 24 geese around here that can’t go 2 feet without dropping a mess. I was LUCKY, he didn’t crap on my day.

Didn’t know they went after lizards. We’ve got some cool one’s around here & we’re always chasing the roadrunners off, will add these to the list.

Don't know about the Great Blue Herons dining on lizards, but they're certainly on the White one's menu, at least around here. 😁
Never seen a white Great Egret at Havasu stalking food away from the water however.
When we had our Sportsfisher in Mission Bay the much smaller Black-Crowned Night Herons would stand on the end of the docks in the evenings, looking for fish. I always referred to them as the 'Groucho Marx' birds the way they stand with their necks tucked way in.

Road Runners crack me up with their brazen antics and how friendly they can become. But they are brutal killers and tenacious as hell when they're after a prey.
I was trying to save a baby dove one day from one, and that prick and I were having dance contest stand-off. He was not going to give up and even though he finally walked away, I have little doubt he returned to finish the job after I'd left the area.

I did watch in complete awe early one morning when a road runner attacked a group of baby quail being escorted by a few adults. He launched a dead sprint, I figured the adults would scatter and a few chicks were doomed --- Nope, the RR was met by several adults who countered aggressively kicking his ass big time. Then three or four kept up the assault driving him away. Attempting to escape these seriously pissed off quail, he flew up into a nearby tree, only to be followed and set upon again by the quail.
They were sending a message I doubt he soon forgot, I was completely surprised and amazed. I had no idea quail were such bad-asses. 👍👍👍

Good post.... I've owned a three story aging apt building perched on bluff above ocean since 2000. Sits above China Cove if you recall the area in cdm. Its haunted for sure and tenants always tell me stories over the years of an aged lady with long white hair passing peacefully through their units. I bought it after divorce so I could have a bachelor pad and its served me well. There's a really dense tall pine tree behind bldg and over these 20 years I've had 3 litters of Great Blue Herons come and go.... my lady and I named the patriarch "Bruce", watched him select a mate, build first nest and then the chicks hatched and all hell broke loose. They return each generation to rebuild old nest and start their families. I became enthralled on first batch watching for hours from my office on top floor. I even saw a chick get pushed out by siblings and fell 60' to grass below. i had that thing in my hand as its eyes closed dying from impact I guess. They truly are dinasaurs of our era and holding a chick makes this evident when you see one that closely. We came back from dinner late one night to find Bruces female mate in street dead. There were power lines above so guessing she came in late and got tangled up. I picked her up by her talons and she stretched open... boy was she light as a kite .... placed her folded up on grassy side and called for her to be removed. Herons are definitely a part of living in my place. Hoping for a new batch soon again.

My buddy and I playing down at China Cove one day saw this very large crab, so dove down and scooped him up and imagine our surprise to find, it was a real deal Alaskan King Crab and he was very much alive. Carried him over to the Sea Research lab at the far end of the beach, knocked on the door, and boy were they surprised when they spotted our catch of the day. 😁 Anyway, we left him there, maybe he escaped or maybe he was just very lost, either way, he was theirs.

Here's a couple of links you might find historically interesting when you've got some time to peruse some pics.

This one is the Orange County Historical archive image bank, but I do recall seeing several from CDM and surrounding area.

Doubt you were there in the 30's 😂

Hey thanks.... I love historical info pertaining to this gem of a village. The fancies call it a village now ha. I'll be sharing the pic with several of my old coot friends I've made over the years.... they were born and raised right here and fathers built their homes 100 years back. They'll relate to this info and its like never that I can ever get them info they didn't already have.
