Went to the store last night after skipping it for many weeks. Holy hell. The only thing in check were eggs, milk and booze. There was a good deal on icecream. I haven't had it in 6 months so I splurged the extra 50 cents.
Ya, this is just the beginning.

Think how my coordinator feels with his budget. We buy a shit load of metal. Last week I went through 20 16g 10’ studs. 400 3/4” 10’ crc. 20 1/8”x6”x10’ mild steel. A bunch of galvi test plates and a bunch of 1” test coupons. I’m hey guys burn it up and toss it out. We literally set money on fire every week.

Don't know where that picture was taken, but thats way outta line. Even for current crazy prices. Plus, HD measures their plywood thickness by the 32nd of an inch. That price is about 50% higher than a sheet of "3/4" at HD here....

I work with precision metal (and plastic) components daily and the pricing for all the raw materials is up, up, up globally. It's getting difficult for us to have quote/price validity that's 15 calendar days (used to be 30 days).

Just bought a 460k of galv pipe to get us through the rest of the year. Gambling hoping it will end up doing down later this year as we are contracted into 2023 on some projects.

Acetone was just under $400 in Dec. we have had 4 price increases, the price is now $1037 a drum !!!! Untucking believable, Inflation is the killer of good economies.... we'll see. This wouldn't be an issue if Trump was running the show.

I want to build a casita, however, lumber and steel prices are killing my planning budget. I am reluctant to pour a foundation that will never get to the structuring phase. I am currently rethinking my build to include ICF 🤔

I can’t even get aluminum extrusion manufactured. Most companies aren’t taking on new business and the ones that will are telling me maybe by the end of the year. Massive aluminum and labor shortages.

And steel prices are through the roof. I paid $22 per 20 footer of 14ga 1x2 back in December and paid $33 last week.

Everything is skyrocketing. Even corrugated boxes are going through the roof. Buckle up boys, this is only the beginning.

If you guys would stop building things, go sit on your couches and watch TV, and collect your stimmies from Uncle Joe we wouldn't have this problem.

Wait until the infrastructure plan starts getting executed. Then you will see some real material increases.

FWIW, who among us doesn't often reminisce about the 'good old days' but then forget the 'good old days' style inflation (60's?, 70's?, 80's)?
maxed at around 20% (1st 'oil crisis')
For a long time we and the world have enjoyed very low inflation, so we all got used to products being cheaper rather than more expensive. It was an underlying component of our GDP / productivity prosperity. Gains went to the doers as the producers of materials drove material cost lower by automation and by engineering savvy. We are bound to go through these adjustments at some point.
Besides, headline inflation as a stat is illusory under the conditions of economic stress we saw over the past 12 months, so the pent up demand in the cycle is now coming on - since we (and the world) are anticipating opening up, or in fact opening. Here's one take on it.

I tried to order some boltless shelving components from my supplier last week....there was a $0.49 per lb surcharge added to the order...and he said it's been going up a couple cents per day. I ended up cutting up all the wrong stuff I had and welding it back together in the right lengths. Crazy.

I have built a few ICF houses. Don't think you would save much on a Casita. It would be great for the R value if in Havasu. Steel and concrete have gone way up as well. I am doing a 45' retaining wall and it's up a $100 a linear foot compared to 3 years ago.

Tom Slick, and anyone seeking aluminum extrusions; that is our business, we are licensed importers.

Lead time is 4 months, and it needs to be a significant order with a standard die. If that fits, PM me we may be able to help. 4K Aluminum is spiking crazy in sales, we ship to 4 states, just managing the cash flow and the insane shipping costs is a full time job.

They are charging you the Biden price. I think we need to come up with a new catchy phrase in Joe's honor for fucking everything up.

I agree and I'll get stickers made.

So anyone with a catchy phrase in Joe's honor?

I buy from mill distributors and cant imagine what it is from a supply yard.

I used to buy from Western Tube and Conduit years ago. But some of their local distributors bitched so I can only buy trailer loads... I only do it for large projects, but thinking it might be better now and sit on it but with my luck the price will drop, lol. So i just sent in a $30k PO so i can get materiel under the April pricing.

I just got a delivery to build perry racks. I wonder what this thing costs after paying me OT to weld it all together and buying materials.

1/8” x 1” and 1/8” x 2”

Boss took pictures and said make it happen. I asked if he took any measurements and he said use your imagination. For the sake of saving material I’m modifying them and not adding the two front posts. I honestly don’t see why I need them.

Yes its crazy.... But it's worse when you write the check out when the bill comes... Most employees don't care what the cost is and shrug shoulders when shits cut wrong. Fortunately that doesn't happen often. But all structural steel gets cut by the yard, be surprised how many wrong cuts we get and they replace them.

the beneficial injection of survival cash by the fed - an independent central bank not beholden to a political party - (while both parties were in the oval office) into the money supply definitively caused an excess of dollars chasing a shortage of goods. the most basic economic concept of market dynamics is what is called the supply-demand curve, and it applies to goods as well as the fiat currency itself.

Pretty much everyone here supported tariffs all the way around.

Add in a good couple rounds of free money, then supply constraints because of covid - and this was absolutely to be expected.

I'm unsure why anyone is surprised by whats happening.

Actually tariffs are not the problem . When they first imposed tariffs the price went up but came back down . The problem is a shortage of raw materials . We now quote an order and give only 1 day on price . Wait a week to place the order and it's going to hurt .

Were talking about lumber, steel and aluminum here.

All have availability issues. All have tariffs - except steel from canada and mexico.

I cant get basic parts either - Ive got about a 5M backlog right now.
