No, too many people have dollars they want to spend. Prices will drop when demand drops.

No, too many people have dollars that aren't worth anything to spend. . Priced aren't dropping anytime soon, infact I belive they will continue to rise as the dollar continues to weaken. The demand isn't slowing, look around everything is exploding.

At some point is has to cool or pop, I don't know.

Actually tariffs are not the problem . When they first imposed tariffs the price went up but came back down . The problem is a shortage of raw materials . We now quote an order and give only 1 day on price . Wait a week to place the order and it's going to hurt . View attachment 997713

yea, my Friday quote expires Monday...... crazy

We are screwed on all building costs, housing cost is going to explode now.
Major lumber mills had record profits last quarter.

Weyerhauser stock was $17.05 May 2020 now it's $39.77.
West Fraser stock was $25.40 May 2020 now it's $79.33.
Intrfor stock was $5.50 May 2020 now it's $27.87.

Mine was BMC account out of Culver City/Playa del rey.

Ganahal seems to be the best. But I only call them when we do large orders.

Ganahl is highest here. Crenshaw lumber. If you have a big order my BIL is wholesale end at Jones. I went Lowes as they have not raised price on those yet to 35$ and got additional 10% off.

I found Ganahl to always be the highest priced. High enough to shop around that morning and show up late to work with better priced material. Jones always had good prices and good yard help.

They opened a huge new location in Torrance and would beat any prices at first. Once a bunch of customers switched to them they raised them. I always price shop and they quickly were 10% plus higher than Crenshaw lumber. They went 10 million over budget on Torrance location so figure they need to make it back.

Best cure for high commodity prices is . . . high commodity prices. Having been around the oil business for the last 30 years, seen it soooo many times. Weird times right now, but all of these basic material prices will get back to normal.

I recently learned the term Demand Destruction in reference to high commodity prices. Is that what you would expect to happen here?

Yes I do. Decreased demand and higher supply that producers of these basic commodities will puke up, to take advantage of current prices, will cause prices to decline IMO. Although I suspect supply chain disruption is causing much of the current pain, with the world economy awakening from the COVID induced slumber of the last year.

A quick look at oil futures prices show backwardation, an abnormal condition when prices for crude oil delivery in periods out in the future are lower than the current price. The normal condition is contango, where futures prices are higher than current. I suspect it’s the same for most basic commodities.

Long response to a short question.

WOW am I out of the loop or what, I went in to see what prices are for some 3/8 or 1/4 steel sheets, they sell them in 4x4 sizes from a steel supply (I needed 2 pieces just around 31"x31") and the quotes I got blew me away. Over $700.00 for 2 pieces total, so would 1 sheet of 4x8 cost that much? is that crazy or am I just that far out of touch with prices to build crap today?

Yes same cost. No cost for us to sheer it down to 4x4 sheets. Some places will have a sheer fee if not a constant buyer.... its always sold as price per LB

Whats your location? I can see what our cost is

Thanks a lot for the offer Done-It I appreciate it, but for what I am trying to do I just wanted to see how it looked but not worth the dough. I have another idea that would do what I want for about $25.00 so I am going to go that route for now.

Not collapse, but LBS is down to $1,000 from $1,500 in mid May. “Normal” seems to be around $500 or so

Just got my May pricing for 1.660 pipe

$2.99 per ft, up from $2.60 per ft in April that's $9.36 per stick @24' lg.

F'ing hell that's $570 per skid...

And with grandpa Joe's talk last night nothing is going to come down.

Now at 3.36 per ft for the same material, that's over 100% increase from January. F'ing hell.

I had a meeting with our pipe supplier yesterday. Material is going up again for August $250 a ton.

So the now material is costing $87.60 per peice starting Tuesday ($3.65 per ft at 24')

I buy 2 other sizes all going up the same.

Silver lining, they are thinking this is the plateau and material should start a very slight decline if the free money stops in September and people go back to work. If not, then the goal post is pushed till after the free money.

Well, wood might be down but not steel.

New increase @ $3.83 ft. $91.92 per 24' lengths. I would have never thought in a million years that I would see this kind of pricing for this material, and to think i was paying $1.62 in Jan. There is no end to this madness.

5 months ago I was quoted $1100 for 8 yards delivered (not pumped)…that’s nuts.

Well, in a few days another increase to
$3.99 ft. I don’t see it ending either, why not keep raising prices. F’ing crazy.
I screwed myself on PVC. Started watching it in January February when the first increases started happening thinking it would go down. Then the Texas freeze hit and it jump drastically. I still kept holding thinking it would come down after summer, now I wish I would have bought at March/April rates LOL

Bid low, buy high😲

We have exploding sales and cannot get parts.

Just received my new increase on pipe. We use a lot of 1.660 od 12ga smooth gal pipe... now $2.60 ft..... 4 week ago it was $2.15 and will be going up again in may. I was paying $1.62 in Jan and with each bundle being 1,464' shit is adding up buying 5-6 bundles at a time........

This doesn't include structural steal. Holy hell...

Going home and drinking......
It’s nuts. I bought a PJ 22k gooseneck dump trailer for $14k about 6 months ago and that same trailer is already over $20k 😳

If Biden unlocks Canadian imports that'll all change.
LOLOLOL......

Canada was so upset with Biden for cancelling the pipeline, they stuck it to us on lumber as a direct result....
